India Bans Chinese Supplied Network Infrastructure Equipment

India's government has reportedly imposed a total ban on imports of telecoms network equipment from China - turning an informal disapproval into a formal ban. According to a report in the Hindu Business Line, the order was sent out by the Department of Telecom (DoT) on Tuesday to some of the operators that were planning to buy equipment from Chinese manufacturers.  more

ZTE Takes Top Spot in Chinese Patents Rankings

China's ZTE has reported that the Patent Protection Association of China (PPAC) recently released patent application rankings for 2009 with ZTE, huawei and Hongfujin claiming the top three spots on the ranking list. With 5,719 patent applications, ZTE widened its lead over its competitors, claiming the top spot for the first time. The number of patent applications filed by ZTE in 2009 was up over 20% compared to the number filed in 2008. Meanwhile, ZTE also saw its overseas patent applications increase over 200%, hitting 1,164, achieving the fastest growth of patent applications in the world.  more

Telecom carriers spent $62 billion on outsourced services in 2008

Market research firm Infonetics Research is reporting that telecom carriers spent US$62 billion on outsourced services in 2008, and have plans to increase that spending. The report noted that the top revenue-generating tasks outsourced by service providers in 2008 include network maintenance, application service delivery, network build, and network planning and design.  more
