Telefonica Announces Wide-Spread Trials of LTE Networks
Telefonica says that it has reached an agreement with six LTE technology providers to launch LTE test projects in six different countries. The suppliers Telefonica has chosen so far: Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, huawei, NEC, Nokia Siemens Networks and ZTE, will start rolling out the equipment necessary for testing the technology during the coming months. more

Nokia Siemens Networks Wins 60% of Russian 3G Tender
Russia's MegaFon has announced the outcome of a 3G network tender, with Nokia Siemens Networks supplying at least 60% of 3G Node -B Base Stations. MegaFon says that it shall decide upon the territory of the equipment supply within Russia at the same time there shall be no exclusivity rights provided to vendors. more

India Considering Ban on Chinese Supplied Network Infrastructure
The Indian government is proposing expanding a partial ban on Chinese supplied mobile phones to include all telecoms equipment from Chinese suppliers, including huawei and ZTE. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has proposed to impose the ban on Chinese vendors in 20 of the country's 22 circles, that it considers to be sensitive due to their proximity to with international borders, although this many be later reduced to 14 circles. more

IMS equipment market thriving; revenue up 108% in 2Q09, led by Ericsson, Huawei
Worldwide sales of IMS equipment jumped 108% between 1Q09 and 2Q09, to $164 million, reports Infonetics Research. While Ericsson has long led the IMS market in overall number of network deployments, huawei, Nokia Siemens, and Alcatel-Lucent are providing serious competition. more

Indian telecom equipment beats downturn; grows 20% to nearly $25 billion
The Indian telecom equipment industry reported a 20% growth in revenues to comfortably cross the US$24 billion mark during FY 2008-09 compared to a 24% growth recorded in the previous financial year (2007-08). Indian trade magazine, Voice&Data said that the result was not surprising because despite overall economic slowdown, India has been witnessing over 10 million month-on-month new mobile subscriber additions, and telecom operators have been buying equipment to expand their networks. more

Alcatel-Lucent May be Back-Up Vendor to Huawei's Indian Contract
More confusion over BSNL's mammoth GSM network tender after it emerged that Alcatel-Lucent may be asked to act as a back-up vendor for the contract awarded to huawei covering the southern end of the country. The telco was told by the Department of Telecoms to be particularly vigilant when testing huawei supplied hardware to ensure there are no exploits in the software installed at the request of the Chinese government. more

Telecom carriers spent $62 billion on outsourced services in 2008
Market research firm Infonetics Research is reporting that telecom carriers spent US$62 billion on outsourced services in 2008, and have plans to increase that spending. The report noted that the top revenue-generating tasks outsourced by service providers in 2008 include network maintenance, application service delivery, network build, and network planning and design. more

Market research firm Infonetics Research released the fourth quarteredition of its Mobile Infrastructure and Subscribers report and noted that the worldwide mobile network infrastructure equipment market grew 6% to US$50.8 billion in 2008 over 2007, and will continue to grow in 2009 and 2010. more
