Thai Operator to Push Ahead with 3G Network Rollout

Thailand's state owned operator, TOT has told the Reuters news agency that it will proceed with plans to deploy a 3G network, with a commercial launch due by the end of the year. The government has previously hinted that it will sell 3G auctions in the first half of this year.  more

O2 Germany to Upgrade Network to Support 28Mbps Data Download Speeds

Telefónica O2 Germany has announced plans to upgrade its network to HSPA+, and start offering peak download speeds of up to 28Mbps in the second half of this year. The network upgrade will initially occur in Munich - where O2 has its headquarters. more

Global Mobile Market to Exceed US$900 Billion in 2008

A report from IDATE says that the world telecom services market is estimated at US$1,365 billion in 2008 - a 4.2% increase over the year before - and is expected to be worth over US$1,416 billion in 2009. With a total turnover estimated at US$742.2 billion in 2008, mobile services account for 54% of the telecom services market and single handedly deliver all of the sector's growth. But the annual growth rate has dropped from more than 12% in 2007 to 8% in 2008.  more

WCDMA equipment up 12% in 3Q; Nokia Siemens leads in mobile switch subsystems

3G Network Launched in Bangkok

Thailand's Advanced Info Service (AIS) is reported to have launched its long planned 3G network - operating in the 900Mhz band - in the capital city, Bangkok. The firm is already operating a 3G network in the 900Mhz band in Chiang Mai, pending the award of 3G licenses and spectrum in the more conventional 2.1Ghz bands.  more

Huawei Wins Indonesian Network Contract

huawei has been chosen by AXIS, Indonesia's newest GSM and 3G operator, as a key partner in rolling out its full service national network. Under the agreement, huawei will design, build, deploy and manage AXIS' 2G/3G network within the island of Java, Bali, Lombok, Kalimantan and Sulawesi for a period of three years to 2010. Specifically, huawei will be responsible for close to 4,000 sites across the country, on GSM and 3G radio access, optical and microwave transmission.  more

Egyptian Network Launches 3G Coverage in Cairo

The Egyptian Company for Mobile Services (Mobinil) has launched its 3G network following several delays, which the company partially put at the door of the telecoms regulator. The company had expected to receive access to the radio spectrum on 17th January, but the radio frequencies were not released until March 27th. The company had hoped to launch its network in July, but again missed its deadline.  more

CDMA450 Upgrade Completed in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan's Uzbek Mobile has completed a US$6.6 million upgrade of its CDMA450 network, Uzmobile's technical director Galina Gafurbekova told the Interfax news agency. The infrastructure, consisting of 70 base stations was supplied by China's huawei.  more
