Bharti Airtel Launches India's Latest 3G Network

­India's Bharti Airtel - now just plain Airtel - has launched its 3G network, with coverage initially in the southern Karnataka state, whose capital is the technology hub of Bangalore. The company expects to offer 3G services in 40 cities by March across all of its 13 licensed areas, and expand the services to 1,500 cities and towns within a year.  more

India's RCom Secures $1.93 Billion Loan from Chinese Banks

­India's Reliance Communications (RCom) has signed a US$1.93 billion syndicated loan with the China Development Bank Corporation, and other Chinese Banks / Financial Institutions. The first and largest Syndicated Loan of US$ 1.33 billion will be for refinancing 3G Spectrum Fees.  more

Equipment vendors continuing to struggle with component shortages

The major western vendors in TBR's 2Q10 Network Business Quarterly (NBQ) Benchmark report found themselves limited by component shortages, most notably in the cases of Ericsson and Nokia Siemens. The good news for these vendors is that as this shortage gradually abates in 2H10, a backlog of deferred activity should result in improving revenue growth.  more

Vodafone Spurns Chinese Vendors for Indian 3G Rollout

Vodafone's Indian subsidiary is reported to be spurning China's huawei and ZTE for its 3G network rollout. Citing unnamed sources, OneIndia News said the the contract for its 3G deployment could go to previous suppliers, Nokia Siemens Networks and Ericsson.  more

Huawei Reported to Have Won Indian 3G Network Contract

China's huawei is reported to have won a managed services 3G network supply contract from India's Tata Teleservices (TTSL). According to media reports, citing a statement from huawei, Tata Teleservices has selected the Chinese vendor to roll out network in five circles.  more

Safaricom to Start LTE Trials Within Two Months

Kenya's Safaricom says that it expects to start technical trials of a huawei supplied LTE upgrade within the next two months. The two companies signed a three year strategic partnership under which Safaricom selected huawei as its vendor of choice for the supply of its core network requirements, and roll out the 4G network at a cost of KES12 billion (US$143 million).  more

Vodafone Greece Deploys HSPA+ Upgrade in Athens

Vodafone Greece has upgraded its 3G network to HSPA+ and now supports peak download rates of up to 28.8 Mbps. Upgraded HSPA+ MIMO Vodafone Mobile Broadband services are initially provided in selected areas of Athens, with plans to expand this elsewhere in the country.  more

Nokia Siemens Networks Wins 60% of Russian 3G Tender

Russia's MegaFon has announced the outcome of a 3G network tender, with Nokia Siemens Networks supplying at least 60% of 3G Node -B Base Stations. MegaFon says that it shall decide upon the territory of the equipment supply within Russia at the same time there shall be no exclusivity rights provided to vendors.  more
