picoChip Shows Off Chinese 3G Standard Femtocell
picoChip has shown off a TD-SCDMA based femtocell software reference design in China, and announced that Digimoc, a Chinese provider of femtocells, as its first publicly disclosed TD-SCDMA customer. Digimoc is using picoChip's PC202 device and PHY software reference design in its femtocell product. more

GSA Survey Confirms 637 HSPA Devices Launched
GSA, the Global mobile Suppliers Association has announced that a total of 637 HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) products have now launched, representing an annual growth of 150%. The number of suppliers increased from 62 to 110 in the same period. The survey incorporates product launch announcements at recent trade shows including CES, Mobile World Congress, CeBIT and CTIA. more

Icera to Acquire Sirific Wireless for RF CMOS Technology
UK based software defined wireless modem chipset developer, Icera has announced plans to merge with Sirific Wireless, a fabless semiconductor company specializing in CMOS RF transceivers. Icera says that the merger will enable it to deliver a complete chipset solution for the mobile broadband market, which industry analysts expect to grow from just 90 million subscribers today to 1.3 billion by 2012. more

Mentum says that MTS Ukraine, a long time customer of its software products, has bought additional licenses of its Planet RF planning and optimization software and associated prediction and optimization modules to support its network expansion. picoChip Introduces TD-SCDMA Femtocell Reference Design
picoChip has launched a TD-SCDMA based femtocell reference design, the first to support this standard. The new design was developed in China at picoChip's Beijing design center. With this introduction picoChip now supports all three 3G standards families: WCDMA (HSPA) through the picoChip PC8208/8209, cdma2000 via GWT partnership, and now TD-SCDMA with the PC8808. picoChip also supports WiMAX Waves 1 and 2 with its PC6530 and PC6532 single chip reference designs respectively. more

W-CDMA market sees dynamic growth
The market for W-CDMA handsets is forecast to see dynamic growth in the next few years, resulting in more than 1 billion handsets being shipped between 2006 and 2012 says a new report from IMS Research. According to the report, the market for WCDMA handsets will have a CAGR of 22% over the next five years, despite competition from alternative 3G technologies, such as WiMAX. more
