Telefonica Conducts 1st Tests of LTE Network in Spain
Spain's Telefónica has conducted its first tests on a live LTE network, installed at its Demonstrations Centre in Madrid. These initial real demonstrations or tests consisted of a VoIP call, and a videocall using an LTE mini-network installed by Ericsson; a video conference, and data and images downloads at speeds in excess of 140 Mbps, around 10 times those possible with current 3G networks using HSPA technology. more

NEC Wins "Super 3G" Contract in Japan
Japan's NTT DoCoMo has contracted with NEC to provide core network EPC (Evolved Packet Core) systems that support NTT DoCoMo's "Super 3G" next generation mobile phone networks. Super3G is a standard system and an advanced version of the W-CDMA-extended technologies HSDPA and hsupa, which achieves data transmission speeds of 100Mbps or more in downlink and 50Mbps or more in uplink access. more

AT&T Reports 20% Speed Increase in Data Speeds
AT&T has announced that its 3G network has seen an average speed increase on its data services by twenty percent in the downlink and fifty percent in the uplink. The upgrades are results of recent network enhancements, including the deployment of High Speed Uplink Packet Access (hsupa) technology across all existing 3G markets before the end of June. more

AT&T Plans Major Expansion of 3G Wireless Broadband Service in 2008
AT&T has detailed the highlights of the company's 2008 wireless network expansion plans, including the deployment of 3G wireless broadband service to more than 80 additional cities in the United States through the course of the year. The planned expansion is expected to deliver AT&T 3G services to nearly 350 leading U.S. markets by the end of 2008, including all of the top 100 U.S. cities. The 3G initiative will include the roll out of more than 1,500 additional cell sites nationwide. more

With over 93 commercial networks in operation, HSPA is likely to account for the majority of investment in global mobile broadband networks over the next five years, finds a new study by Arthur D. Little. By comparison mobile WiMax will be a niche technology within the overall global mobile broadband wireless access market, likely to account for at most 15% of this network equipment market and perhaps 10% of mobile broadband wireless subscribers by 2011-2012. more
