Global HSPA Mobile Broadband Connections Have Surpassed 400 Million

­There are now over 400 million mobile broadband subscribers using hspa networks, according to figures released by the GSM Association. Ericsson Launches HSPA Module for Netbook Computers

Ericsson has launched its latest hspa mobile broadband module specifically designed for mini laptop computers, also known as netbooks. Ericsson has also pre-approved its modules with mobile operators in more than 75 countries, allowing netbook manufacturers to cut the product launch phase by shortening the final certification process and enabling faster time to market.  more

HSPA accounts for 11.6% of PC broadband connections in Europe

According to a new research report from the analyst firm Berg Insight, hspa accounted for 11.6 percent of the total number of broadband connections in Europe at the end of 2008. The number of hspa/LTE mobile broadband subscribers (connected PCs) grew by 74 percent year-on-year in 2008 to reach 14.6 million and is forecasted to continue to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 30 percent to 70 million in 2014.  more

Cost of Supporting Mobile Broadband is Eroding Subscriber Profitability

Mobile broadband services are more expensive to support than any other wireless service and are endangering subscriber profitability for many mobile network operators concludes a new study from WDSGlobal. The study found that the cost to support mobile broadband products and services is up to 200% greater than the cost to support traditional wireless products such as mobile phones. This means that despite revenue uplift from increased data usage, actual subscriber profitability often remains unchanged and sometimes even worsens.  more

Mongolia Gets HSPA Network Upgrade

Mongolian operator MobiCom has launched a hspa upgrade, with the network supplied by Ericsson. The launch enables MobiCom to introduce mobile broadband services to its subscribers across Mongolia, starting in the capital Ulaanbaatar where about 40 percent of the country's 3 million inhabitants live.  more

Study Finds Large Cost Savings for Migrating Heavy Data Users to Femtocells

Signals Research Group has completed a whitepaper on the business case for femtocells as part of its ongoing femtocell business modeling initiative with the trade group, the Femto Forum. The study found, across a wide variety of scenarios considering different regions of the world, the business case for femtocells is strong---often doubling the customer lifetime value---and does not depend on any one critical factor or assumption in order to generate a favorable outcome. Ericsson Wins 4-Year 3G Upgrade Contract in Turkey

Turkish operator Avea has signed a four year contract with Ericsson for a WCDMA/hspa upgrade. Under the agreement, Ericsson will be one of the main suppliers and will integrate and deploy WCDMA/hspa radio access and packet core networks, as well as a complete mobile-backhaul solution based on microwave transmission and optical transport.  more
