Smartphone sales buck the recession
A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession. more

LG Electronics Embedding Ericsson Mobile Modems in Computers
LG Electronics is to start embedding Ericsson supplied hspa based mobile modems into their laptops, starting immediately. LG Electronics notebooks and netbooks will include mobile broadband modules from Ericsson in Q3 2008. more

China Mobile Planning 3,000 3G Base Station for Shanghai
China Mobile's Shanghai branch has said it will install over 3,000 TD-SCDMA base stations in Shanghai this year as it prepares to launch 3G services commercially. The company is already running trials of the network and handsets, although there have been complaints about coverage from the network and battery life in the handsets. more

GSMA Picks LG Phones to Lead HSPA Promotions
The GSM Association (GSMA) has announced that a panel comprising of nine operators has selected two mobile phones developed by LG Electronics as the winning products to spearhead its GSMA's Horizon Phone initiative - which aims to promote hspa services in the 850Mhz band. more
