Industry predicts 21 Mbps to be next mobile broadband baseline
Mobile broadband is continuing to grow at a fast pace due to the ever increasing introduction of new technologies, new networks, new devices and competitive innovation in the market. In July, the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) announced that 7.2 Mbps had become the new baseline for mobile broadband globally, since at that time half of the hspa networks in commercial service globally were capable of supporting a peak downlink data speed of 7.2 Mbps or higher, supported by almost 600 user devices capable of 7.2 Mbps or higher which had been launched in the market. Some hspa systems support a peak downlink data speed up to 14.4 Mbps. more

Increasing Deployment of UMT at 900Mhz
The pace of commercialisation of UMTS 900 systems has quickened, according to a new Information Paper published by GSA, the Global mobile Suppliers Association. The report notes that for the same service offering and coverage, the number of base station sites in the 900 MHz band can be reduced by 60% compared to that needed for 2100 MHz, and reduce rollout time. more

Three Quarters of 3G/WCDMA Operators Have Launched HSPA
New research by GSA ? the Global mobile Suppliers Association, has confirmed that 3G/WCDMA is now commercially launched by 174 network operators in 78 countries. The GSA's latest survey confirms that 128 HSDPA networks have commercially launched service in 63 countries, i.e. HSDPA is enabled on almost three quarters of 3G/WCDMA networks. A further 50 HSDPA networks are currently in deployment ? making a total of 178 HSDPA operator commitments in 80 countries, an increase of 71% compared with 104 commitments in July 2006. And the number of commercial HSDPA networks has more than tripled in 12 months, from 42 to 128 today. more

The Global mobile Suppliers Association has announced its support for the new 3GPP study items on EDGE Evolution. EDGE Evolution is envisaged to bring on average 2-3 fold data speeds compared to EDGE rates today, higher voice and data capacity and improved spectral efficiency. Many operators are deploying a combined WCDMA/EDGE network strategy for delivery of 3G services. EDGE Evolution is a natural complement to hspa (High Speed Packet Access) which will enhance WCDMA data rates and capacity. more
