Cost of Supporting Mobile Broadband is Eroding Subscriber Profitability
Mobile broadband services are more expensive to support than any other wireless service and are endangering subscriber profitability for many mobile network operators concludes a new study from WDSGlobal. The study found that the cost to support mobile broadband products and services is up to 200% greater than the cost to support traditional wireless products such as mobile phones. This means that despite revenue uplift from increased data usage, actual subscriber profitability often remains unchanged and sometimes even worsens. more

Study Finds Large Cost Savings for Migrating Heavy Data Users to Femtocells
Signals Research Group has completed a whitepaper on the business case for femtocells as part of its ongoing femtocell business modeling initiative with the trade group, the Femto Forum. The study found, across a wide variety of scenarios considering different regions of the world, the business case for femtocells is strong---often doubling the customer lifetime value---and does not depend on any one critical factor or assumption in order to generate a favorable outcome. Further to this, the research demonstrated that femtocells can dramatically reduce the growing financial costs made by heavy mobile broadband data users on the mobile network. more

3G-4G to Account for 30% of Global Wireless Subscriptions by 2013
At the end of 2008, only 11% of worldwide wireless subscriptions were 3G. By the end of 2013, the percentage of 3G and 4G subscriptions will reach 30%, reports In-Stat. This trend is reflected in fourth quarter 2008 wireless infrastructure contract awards. more

Recession isn't holding back mobile broadband subscribers
Market research firm Infonetics Research released the fourth quarter (4Q08) edition of its Mobile Broadband Cards, Routers, Services, and Subscribers report last week. The report found that worldwide, the number of mobile broadband subscribers (including W- CDMA/hspa and CDMA2000/EV-DO) jumped 125% in 2008 over 2007, hitting 210.5 million, and are expected to top 1 billion by 2013. more
