Huawei to Deploy HSPA Upgrade in Vietnam

Vietmanese ­mobile network operator, Viettel says that it has signed a network upgrade contract with Huawei for hspa services to be delivered by the end of 2009. Local newspaper, Thanh Nien reported that Huawei will build more than 3,000 base stations throughout Vietnam, including in Hanoi, Da Nang and parts of Ho Chi Minh City.  more

Vodafone Greece Offers 21.6 Mbps Mobile Download Speeds

Vodafone Greece has announced the launch of a hspa+ (High Speed Packet Access) upgrade to its network, offering peak speeds of 21.6 Mbps (download) and 5.7 Mbps (upload). New upgraded services will initially be provided in selected areas of Athens, which will be continuously expanded.  more

Etisalat Upgrades 3G Mobile Download Speeds

UAE based Etisalat says that it has completed the nationwide upgrade of its 3G mobile network to enable mobile broadband download speeds of up to 14.4 Megabits per second (Mbps).  more

LTE Becomes Real; 3G Gaining Ground

Despite the buzz about LTE, only 11% of total cellular subscriptions worldwide are 3G, according to market research and consultancy In-Stat. By 2013, the percentage will rise to 28%. Meanwhile, LTE is moving beyond talk and into real contract awards.  more

Mobily Upgrades 40 More Saudi 3G Base Stations

Saudi Arabia's Mobily says that it has upgraded 40 more of its base stations in the Eastern Region to support higher mobile data speeds. The upgrades included sites in Dammam, Khobar, Dhahran and the Jubail Industrial City and the Dammam Port, as well as the towns of Sihat, Qatif and Kalabia in Ahsaa.  more

DiGi Expands 3G Coverage in Malaysia

Malaysian mobile network operator, DiGi Telecommunications has launched its 3G service in Sabah and Penang just two months after its official launch in Klang Valley as part of an aggressive expansion plan to bring its broadband service to more Malaysians. It is now on track to cover more than 1,000 zones nationwide by the end of this year.  more

Cost of Supporting Mobile Broadband is Eroding Subscriber Profitability

Mobile broadband services are more expensive to support than any other wireless service and are endangering subscriber profitability for many mobile network operators concludes a new study from WDSGlobal. The study found that the cost to support mobile broadband products and services is up to 200% greater than the cost to support traditional wireless products such as mobile phones. This means that despite revenue uplift from increased data usage, actual subscriber profitability often remains unchanged and sometimes even worsens.  more
