Telecom carriers spent $62 billion on outsourced services in 2008
Market research firm Infonetics Research is reporting that telecom carriers spent US$62 billion on outsourced services in 2008, and have plans to increase that spending. The report noted that the top revenue-generating tasks outsourced by service providers in 2008 include network maintenance, application service delivery, network build, and network planning and design. more

European Handheld Demand Evaporates in 3Q06
According to the latest market data from IDC, the European mobile devices market, including standalone handhelds and converged devices, grew by 13% year on year in the third quarter of 2006 as shipments reached 3.84 million units. However, while market performance constituted a significant improvement following the market decline seen in the previous quarter, growth was buoyed solely by healthy converged device growth of 30% year on year as the handheld market declined for a fourth consecutive quarter. more

European Converged Device Market Shows Poor Opening Quarter
According to the latest market data from IDC, the Western European mobile device market (including standalone handhelds and converged devices) grew by 25% year on year in the opening quarter of 2006, as total shipments reached 3.2 million units. Significantly, the handheld market failed to recover from the dramatic decline in 4Q05, as shipments of just 549,000 units represented further negative growth of -21% year on year, with only Fujitsu Siemens registering positive growth. Additionally, disappointing growth of 43% and shipments of 2.67 million units for converged devices meant market performance fell below expectations. more

Worldwide Smartphone Market Soars in Q3
The continuing shift from standalone handhelds to converged smart mobile devices was confirmed again by the latest estimates released by analyst firm Canalys. The positions of the top four device vendors worldwide remained unchanged from Q2, with hp displacing Japanese smart phone vendor Fujitsu to take fifth place.

The global market for smart mobile devices continued its meteoric rise in Q2 according to estimates released by Canalys. The positions of the top three vendors, Nokia, Palm and RIM, remained unchanged from Q1, though strong performance by Motorola, particularly in China and Japan, helped it re-enter the top five narrowly ahead of Fujitsu. Fujitsu itself enjoyed a strong Q2 thanks to the mid-quarter launch of its new FOMA F901iS smart phone. more
