Twenty-One People Jailed in the UK for Mobile Phone Smuggling

Twenty-one people have been jailed in the UK for a collective 133 years after being convicted for stealing £138 million in tax fraud - typically involving shipping mobile phones to evade sales taxes. The UK's HM Revenue & Customs (hmrc) carried out three separate investigations, one involving four people; a second which involved twelve people and a third involving seven men.  more

UK Government Backs Down on Taxing Charity SMS Messages

The UK government has clarified that sales taxes should not be charged on SMS messages which are used to raise funds for charity. The clarification came from Jane Kennedy MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, who, in a written answer to a question raised by MP Mark Oaten, stated: "Donations to charity, including those made by text message, are outside the scope of VAT-which means that no VAT is payable on them."  more

Ten People Arrested in Mobile Phone Tax Fraud

The UK's customs officers (hmrc) have arrested 10 people who are accused of buying mobile phones in order to exploit a tax fraud. Arrests were made across the UK, and 20 premises were searched in the co-ordinated dawn raids. Operation Varlet, followed an 18 month investigation into a complicated missing trader VAT fraud, commonly known as "carousel" fraud.  more

Multi-Million Dollar Phone Tax Fraud Blocked

A suspected EUR165 (US$212) million phone fraud has been disrupted during a joint UK and German operation against VAT carousel fraud. Codenamed 'Operation Sunrise', mixed teams of UK and German customs officers were deployed on the Swiss - German border and at Frankfurt airport to gather intelligence about the movement of goods into the European Union. more
