Sonera seeks to build a mobile TV network

Sonera Mobile says that it has filed a licence application to build a nationwide mobile television network in Finland. The company will be ready to start constructing a network targeting at commercial operation in 2006. According to the plan set forth in the application, Sonera would begin building the mobile TV network from the towns with the highest number of people to ensure a speedy introduction for the service. more

New forum to push Java handset development

The OSGi Alliance has announced the formation of the Mobile Expert Group, a new working body designed to further promote the use of Java technology in the mobile space. Comprised of industry leaders including BMW, Gatespace Telematics, IBM, Motorola, Nokia, Oracle, Panasonic, ProSyst, Siemens VDO Automotive, Sun Microsystems, Telcordia Technologies and others, the Mobile Expert Group is chartered with defining requirements and specifications for the next generation of Java technology-based platform software, targeting data-capable mobile devices. more

Nokia de-lists from the London stock exchange

Nokia has filed an application to de-list its shares from the London Stock Exchange. The liquidity of Nokia shares has been for several years very limited on the London Stock Exchange, currently representing less than 1% of the total trading volume of Nokia shares globally. This measure will encourage the concentration of the trading of Nokia shares in the most liquid market places in Europe as well as in other markets. more

Nokia demos 3G voice over IP call

Nokia and Vodafone Omnitel have carried out the world's first VoIP call completed in a 3GPP release 4 compliant network that transports circuit-switched voice and data calls through an IP backbone. The call was performed using the commercial Nokia MSC Server and Nokia Media Gateway products in laboratories in helsinki during a two-day visit by a technical management delegation from Vodafone Omnitel to study the Nokia MSC Server implementation. more

3G network launched and demo's

Austria's leading mobile operator mobilkom has launched its 3G network. Ahead of schedule, mobilkom austria announced the start of 3G service in major parts of Austria. Service was inaugurated with a live streaming video call between the cities of Vienna and Graz, using Nortel and Ericsson equipment. Approximately 25% of the country's geographic area, including most major urban districts, is covered in the initial 3G launch. more
