GSMA Applauds Actions to Establish a Harmonised Approach to Spectrum Allocation

The GSM Association says that it has welcomed an initiative driven by the Finnish Ministry of Communications to develop a unified approach to the allocation of 'Digital Dividend' spectrum - the spectrum that will be freed up by the switchover from analogue to digital TV - in the Baltic Sea region. The Ministry recently hosted a Baltic Sea Summit on the digital dividend in helsinki attended by government delegations from all the Baltic Sea states, namely Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden.  more

Mobile Indoor Positioning trial launched at Helsinki Shopping Center

Nokia has announced the launch of a mobile indoor positioning trial at Kamppi Shopping Center in helsinki Finland. Mobile Internet, multimedia and mapping capture 40% of smartphone face time

Hannu Verkasalo, who has the public examination of his doctoral dissertation at helsinki University of Technology on April 17th, says that "the usage of new smartphone applications, including the mobile Internet, games, multimedia and map applications, has been increasing among smartphone users and reaches already 40% of total face time". However, most of the usage is still based on voice and text messaging.  more

Nokia to Close R&D Site - Cut Handset Production at Factory

Nokia has announced plans to close the Jyväskylä site and concentrate mobile devices R&D in Finland at Tampere, Oulu, Salo and the helsinki metropolitan area. Nokia also plans to scale down Salo production with staggered temporary lay-offs, aligning production with market demand while continuing operations without interruption.  more

Nokia Opens an Office in Hollywood

Nokia's newest research laboratory has been established - in the Hollywood area of California, US. The new NRC Hollywood laboratory will research on many technologies surrounding the media industry: film, music, games, web and TV.
