Telecom Italia Mobile Lost 1.5 Million Customers in 2008

The Italian market lost a total of 135k customers over the year, with net losses in Q2 and Q4 trumping the smaller net gains in the other two periods. The year closed with a total base of 88.58m, compared to 88.72m, while penetration dropped from 152.6% to 152.4%.  more

Vodafone Sees Loss of UK Market Share and Lower ARPUs

The UK added over 3m new mobile connections during 2008, to take the total base to 75.75m, equivalent to 124% penetration. Vodafone, Hutchison Whampoa to Merge Australian Networks

Vodafone and Hutchison Whampoa have announced plans to merge their Australian networks to form a single mobile operator. Both companies will own 50% of the joint venture - which will retain the Vodafone brand name, although they retain the rights to the "three" brand as well. To equalise the value difference between the respective businesses, Vodafone will receive a deferred payment of A$500 million (US$337 million) from the joint venture company, VHA (Vodafone Hutchison Australia).  more

UK Operators Facing Further Cuts in Mobile Termination Rates

The UK's Competition Commission has ruled that the mobile operators should lower their landline to mobile termination rates by around 20% by 2010/11 - and to a rate which is lower than was proposed by the telecoms regulator, Ofcom.  more

PLDT, Hutchison Whampoa Units Sign MVNO Deal in Italy

Hutchison 3G Italy Ordered to Suspend Debt Collection for 3G Data Charges

Hutchison 3G Italy has been ordered to suspend debt collection procedures against customers who are contesting their mobile data charges. The Italian Competition Authority issued the order after it launched an investigation to determine whether the operator had used unfair commercial practices regarding tariff plans for internet use.  more

Setback for O2 in Hutchison 3G UK Trademark Dispute

A legal opinion from the European Court of Justice has found that the use of a competitors trademark in an advertisement is permitted under EU advertising rules. The decison comes from an appeal by UK operator O2 over the use of its "bubbles" trademark in an advert by rival operator, Hutchison 3G UK.  more
