Kenyan Government Cuts Taxes on Mobile Phone Handsets
The cost of buying a mobile phone in Kenya has dropped sharply after the government waived the import duty on mobile phones. Kenya's Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta cut the 16% VAT on new phone handsets in the government's budget statement - along with reducing import duties on a whole range of other products. more
Argentina Planning Higher Taxes on Mobile Phone Imports
The GSM Association (gsma) says that it is concerned about plans to raise taxes on mobile phones in Argentina. The bill seeks to extend internal taxes on mobile handsets to a 17% nominal rate for imports and/or sales which are not produced in the Tierra del Fuego special economic zone. more

Dialog Telekom Chooses GSMA's PathFinder Service
Sri Lanka's Dialog Telekom has signed up to the GSM Association's PathFinder Service, a gsma-managed service operated by NeuStar that provides the missing link for operators as they make the move to all-IP mobile networks, tackling critical issues around routing, interoperability, number resolution and service and revenue assurance. By automatically translating phone numbers into IP addresses, PathFinder will help Dialog Telekom to facilitate the delivery of a wide variety of new feature rich IP-based services as well as ensure quality of service. more

NXP Propels NFC with World's First Industry Standard Chip
Semiconductor firm, NXP has unveiled what it says is the world's first truly industry standard Near Field Communication (NFC) controller, delivering a platform for handset manufacturers and operators to introduce NFC devices and services. Visa Works with GSMA to Extend Access to Mobile Financial Services
Credit card merchant, Visa has announced plans to work with the GSM Association to advance the delivery of mobile financial services around the world. As part of the continuing collaboration between the two organizations, the gsma has selected Visa as a provider for mobile money transfer solutions globally, and is working to execute an agreement to formalize participation terms. more

Digicel Powers 60% of Vanuatu Network from Wind and Solar Energy
The Vanuatu arm of multi-national operator, Digicel has completed the second phase of its green power network implementation and is using wind and solar energy solutions to power 25 base stations on the Pacific archipelago. Digicel, which is the leading mobile operator in Vanuatu, now carries more than 60% of its network traffic on base stations powered by renewable energy sources. more

Belgacom ICS Certified as GSMA Compliant Roaming Hub
Belgium based, Belgacom ICS has announced the successful completion of the self-certification process of its Open Connectivity Roaming Hub. With the Open Connectivity (OC) Initiative, the gsma is looking for new ways to set up Interconnection and Roaming relationships between mobile operators through a hub as an alternative to implementing one-to-one roaming relationships across the world's GSM networks. This follows the existing achievements of the Open Connectivity SMS Interworking Hub for which Belgacom ICS was the first to be certified. more
