Telstra Launches 21Mbps Download Service

Australian network, Telstra has commercially launched the world's fastest mobile broadband service. The service will offer a 21Mbps peak download rate and the peak network speeds will increase to 42Mbps later this year.  more

Rich Communication Suite Initiative Gains Momentum

The gsma has reported significant progress in the Rich Communication Suite (RCS) Initiative, a service providing enriched communication capabilities such as in-call multimedia sharing, conversational messaging and presence-enhanced contact management, all accessible through a user's mobile phone contact list. The initiative has generated considerable momentum across a number of fronts since the gsma brought RCS into its work programme in September 2008, including the delivery of the RCS Release 1 specification, the addition of new programme participants and the successful completion of interoperability tests.  more

GSMA Claims 4 Billionth Mobile Phone Connection

The GSM Association today announced that the mobile world has celebrated its four billionth connection, according to Wireless Intelligence, the gsma's market intelligence unit. They expect to reach a staggering six billion connections by 2013.  more

Belgacom ICS Certified as GSMA Compliant Roaming Hub

Belgium based, Belgacom ICS has announced the successful completion of the self-certification process of its Open Connectivity Roaming Hub. With the Open Connectivity (OC) Initiative, the gsma is looking for new ways to set up Interconnection and Roaming relationships between mobile operators through a hub as an alternative to implementing one-to-one roaming relationships across the world's GSM networks. This follows the existing achievements of the Open Connectivity SMS Interworking Hub for which Belgacom ICS was the first to be certified.  more

T-Mobile CTO to Leave the Firm

T-Mobile International's Chief Technology Officer, Joachim Horn has announced that he is to leave the company at the end of March to pursue a new professional opportunity outside of Germany. A successor for him will be announced in the near future.  more

GSMA Urges Latin American Regulators to Relax radio Spectrum Limits

Tight spectrum caps in some Latin American countries are artificially curbing uptake and usage of broadband in the region, according to a study by consultancy Arthur D Little (ADL) for the gsma, the global trade group for the mobile industry. The study found that rigid restrictions on the amount of spectrum available to mobile operators are undermining their ability to provide mobile broadband services that would enable millions of people to access the Internet, email and other online services via computers and handsets at high speeds in areas lacking DSL or cable broadband connections.  more

Bangladeshi Confirms 3G Licenses by Next March

Bangladesh's telecoms regulator, the BTRC has confirmed that it plans to award 3G licenses in the country by March 2009 - a delay on earlier promises to offer the licenses by the end of this year. During the launch of a trial 3G network by Ericsson in August, BTRC chairman Maj Gen (retd.) Manzurul Alam put a valuation of US$200 million on the licenses.  more

GSM Trade Body Wants All New Phones to Have NFC by Mid-2009

Tanzania's Internet Cafes Using Vodacom HSPA Network for Backhaul

Vodacom Tanzania, supported by the gsma Development Fund and Qualcomm has connected Internet cafes in three of Tanzania's cities to its HSPA mobile broadband network. Run by local entrepreneurs, each Internet cafe is equipped with several computer terminals connected to Vodacom's HSPA network, which can provide download speeds of up to 7.2 megabits per second.  more
