Motorola Wins Chinese 3G Contract

Motorola says that it has won a W-CDMA contract with China Unicom for an undisclosed amount. Under the contract, Motorola will provide China Unicom with W-CDMA radio access network equipment, packet switched core network (PS core), and 2G/3G interoperability functions that will enable the integration of China Unicom's gsm and W-CDMA networks.  more

Caribbean & Latin America - CDMA Enters its "Sunset" Phase

The technology story in the Caribbean & Latin America (CALA) region is simple: most US based technologies are in full retreat, while the international gsm/W-CDMA standards are proliferating. During the quarter, the number of customers connected to AMPS, TDMA and CDMA systems declined by 4.4m overall, bringing the number of disconnections so far this year to 19.9m, or 5.2% of the starting base.  more

Smartphone sales buck the recession

A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession.  more

China Unicom Selects Alcatel-Lucent to Deploy 3G Networks in 14 Provinces

Alcatel-Lucent says that it has been selected by China Unicom to deploy 3G W-CDMA networks in 14 Chinese provinces. Initial network deployments in the cities of Tianjin, Baoding, Wenzhou, Taizhou, Guiyang and Guilin are expected to be completed in May, 2009.  more

Nigeria's Second Best Quarter for Subscriber Growth

Nigeria's Q3 08 growth could not match the record-breaking levels seen in the previous quarter, when 7.38m new connections were added - more than double the best figure recorded in any other African nation. However, its third-quarter boost of 4.11m was the second best figure ever recorded in the market, which is particularly impressive given that one of the top three operators, Glo, suffered a loss of 0.6m customers in the quarter. At the end of Q3, there were 55.8m connections in Nigeria, up 51% year on year with annual net additions of 18.8m.  more

Brazil's Penetration Set to Surpass 80% as Total Market Reaches 140m

Brazilian penetration is racing upwards, with a 14.0pp gain in the twelve months ending 30th September 2008 taking the figure to 73.2%. This compares to an 8.3pp gain in the prior twelve months. At the time of writing, penetration is likely to be approaching 80%, and although it is common for markets to slow down as 100% penetration is neared, a penetration rate in excess of 90% by the end of 2009 is a possibility.  more

European Mobile Subscriber Growth Falls to Sixth Successive Low

Quarterly net additions in the European mobile market moved to their highest level so far in 2008 in the third quarter, hitting 13.7m, after 9.8m and 11.0m in the first two quarters respectively. Proportionate growth followed suit, climbing to 1.8%, from 1.3% and 1.5% in the two prior periods.  more
