Chinese Operators to Spend Nearly $3 Billion on Earthquake Repairs

Motorola Wins Chinese 3G Contract
Motorola says that it has won a W-CDMA contract with China Unicom for an undisclosed amount. Under the contract, Motorola will provide China Unicom with W-CDMA radio access network equipment, packet switched core network (PS core), and 2G/3G interoperability functions that will enable the integration of China Unicom's gsm and W-CDMA networks. more

Apple's iPhone Appears on China Unicom Website
In a move which is bound to fuel speculation, China Unicom's Shanghai division has posted details of the Apple iPhone upon its customer website. Although no details are offered about availability, the model being displayed does seem to have had at least one modification for the local market - it supports Chinese language inputs, suggesting the specifications have come from an internal document. more

China Unicom Selects Alcatel-Lucent to Deploy 3G Networks in 14 Provinces
Alcatel-Lucent says that it has been selected by China Unicom to deploy 3G W-CDMA networks in 14 Chinese provinces. Initial network deployments in the cities of Tianjin, Baoding, Wenzhou, Taizhou, Guiyang and Guilin are expected to be completed in May, 2009. more

Ericsson Wins Chinese 3G Network Contract
Ericsson says that it has been selected by China Unicom to supply WCDMA networks and services for 15 Chinese provinces. Ericsson, along with its partners, was awarded contracts to supply WCDMA core and/or radio access network systems in 15 provinces, including Beijing, Jilin, Jiangsu, Hubei, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Anhui, Henan, Hainan, Shanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, Shandong, Guangdong and Hunan. more

China Unicom Confirms in Talks with Apple of iPhone Sales

Growth back on track as China Telecom records first gain
Having seen monthly gains averaging 8.9m in the first six months of 2008, the Chinese market did not manage to post a figure above 7.9m in the second six months of the year. This was because of the impact of Unicom's sale of its CDMA network: in July-September, Unicom saw monthly declines in its CDMA base, presumably because its imminent sale reduced the need to attract new customers; in October, China Telecom acquired the network and cleaned up the base, with a net loss of 13.3m; and in November and December there were further losses to the CDMA base, presumably due to further rationalisation. more

Nokia Siemens Networks Wins Chinese Contracts Worth $1.1 Billion
China Mobile and China Unicom have separately signed agreements to purchase 2G and 3G mobile equipments and services from Nokia Siemens Networks during 2009. Under the framework agreements Nokia Siemens Networks will roll out WCDMA networks for China Unicom in 11 provinces across China. In addition, it will provide China Mobile with TD-SCDMA and gsm networks. more

China's Handset Industry Growth Slowed in Second Half of 2008
According to statistics of the ITIS project - a project initiated by Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs and conducted by Taipei-based MIC - China's mobile phone industry reached a shipment volume of 175.2 million units in the third quarter of 2008, representing 6.2% sequential growth and 4.3% year-on-year growth. The industry's growth rate, which peaked in 2006, gradually slowed down to mid-single digits. This indicated that the Chinese mobile phone industry was significantly impacted by a slowdown in global market demand. more

ZTE Secures More than Half of China Unicom GSM VAS Tenders
China's ZTE Corp. says that it has secured more than a 55% share in China Unicom's 2008 bulk purchase of gsm value-added service [VAS] systems, according to the recently announced tender result.
