Motorola Wins Chinese 3G Contract
Motorola says that it has won a W-CDMA contract with China Unicom for an undisclosed amount. Under the contract, Motorola will provide China Unicom with W-CDMA radio access network equipment, packet switched core network (PS core), and 2G/3G interoperability functions that will enable the integration of China Unicom's gsm and W-CDMA networks. more

Electricity Meters to Transmit Usage Data over T-Mobile Network
Echelon Corp. and T-Mobile USA have announced an alliance to accelerate the adoption of the smart grid in the North American market by reducing the communications cost of smart meters through the deployment of Echelon's Networked Energy Services (NES) system over T-Mobile's gsm network. As part of the agreement, Echelon will utilize an embedded T-Mobile SIM within a cellular radio module to enable all the Echelon smart meters on a given low voltage transformer to communicate back to the utility over the smart grid, and T-Mobile will offer users of Echelon's NES system and pricing plans for data usage. more

Tata Teleservices Outlines $2 Billion CAPEX During 2009-10
India's Tata Teleservices has earmarked a US$2 billion CAPEX for the current financial year to expand its gsm network nationwide. The operator already has a CDMA network, but is planning a gsm overlay after the government granted it permission to operate both technologies on a single license. more

EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies
Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007. more

Vietnamese Network Signs Network Upgrade Contract
Vietnam's Vinaphone has contracted with Alcatel-Lucent to upgrade its gsm network in 16 northern provinces with EDGE data services. The contract was signed through Alcatel-Lucent's Chinese subsidiary, Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell. The deployment is currently underway and the expanded network will begin providing commercial services in April 2009. more

Hutchison Telecom has announced that its Vietnamese operation, Vietnamobile will launch its gsm services tomorrow ( 9th April). Vietnamobile, the partnership between Hutchison Telecom and Hanoi Telecom Joint Stock Company, will launch its service over its gsm network with footprint present at 64 provinces in Vietnam. more

China Telecom - the First to Offer EPON-based 3G Services
ZTE has announced that China Telecom has deployed its Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON) Solution, which enabled China Telecom to cutover between EPON technology, which carries CDMA 1X services and EVDO data services to implement the world's first EPON technology that offers 3G services. more
