Switzerland to Permit 3G at 900Mhz - Extends Licenses

Switzerland's telecoms regulator, ComCom has renewed the gsm mobile telephony licences of Orange, Sunrise and Swisscom until the end of 2013. All the countries gsm licences, which were provisionally extended in April 2008, will now all expire at the same time (Swisscom, Sunrise, Orange and In&Phone). This gives ComCom an opportunity to implement a comprehensive reallocation of all the mobile telephony frequencies which are free today or which will become free in 2013 or 2016.  more

EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies

Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007.  more

Jordan Announces Delayed 3G License Tender

Jordan's telecoms regulator, the TRC has published the tender document for its 3G licenses. The regulator has set a reserve price of JOD25 million (US$35.5 million) per block of 5+5 Mhz spectrum. Bidders will also be able to bid for an optional block of gsm spectrum, enabling any new entrant to provide both 2G and 3G services.  more

Orange Launches a GSM Network in Uganda

France Telecom, through its Orange brand has launched a new network in Uganda. Last October, France Telecom took over the national gsm license held by Hits Telecom Uganda after buying a 53% stake in the firm.  more

Orange Offers Lost Dog Tracker Service

Orange UK has launched a mobile phone type collar for pet dogs to track their locations. According to the Missing Pets Bureau, nearly 2,500 dogs were lost or stolen every week in 2007. The Retrieva collar will help combat this through its instant tracking and alert system linked directly to your mobile phone.  more
