Indian telecom equipment beats downturn; grows 20% to nearly $25 billion

The Indian telecom equipment industry reported a 20% growth in revenues to comfortably cross the US$24 billion mark during FY 2008-09 compared to a 24% growth recorded in the previous financial year (2007-08). Indian trade magazine, Voice&Data said that the result was not surprising because despite overall economic slowdown, India has been witnessing over 10 million month-on-month new mobile subscriber additions, and telecom operators have been buying equipment to expand their networks.  more

AIS Suspends 3G Expansion Pending License Auction

Thailand's Advanced Info Service (AIS) has suspended the expansion of its trial 3G network running over the 900Mhz band, citing concerns about congestion for its existing gsm subscribers. The conpany will now wait for the long delayed 3G auction to release radio spectrum in the more conventional 2100 Mhz bands.  more

One billion subscribers served, and counting

Nokia Siemens Networks says that its delivered mobile softswitching (MSS) system capacity has passed the 1 billion user mark. This landmark achievement means Nokia Siemens Networks’ solution is used for 40% of mobile softswitching worldwide and for over a quarter of all connections in those mobile networks based on the gsm family of standards.  more

Alcatel-Lucent May be Back-Up Vendor to Huawei's Indian Contract

More confusion over BSNL's mammoth gsm network tender after it emerged that Alcatel-Lucent may be asked to act as a back-up vendor for the contract awarded to Huawei covering the southern end of the country. The telco was told by the Department of Telecoms to be particularly vigilant when testing Huawei supplied hardware to ensure there are no exploits in the software installed at the request of the Chinese government.  more

New Technology Could Double 3G Network Voice Call Capacity

Finnish operator Elisa and Nokia Siemens Networks have demonstrated a new technology that allows operators to increase voice capacity of their 3G networks, potentially up to double the baseline capacity. The trial call was conducted in Elisa's live 3G network using R&D prototype devices supplied by Nokia. In technical terms the demonstration was of the world's first circuit switched call over a high speed packet access network (CSoHSPA).  more

Bakcell Launches EDGE Upgrade in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani mobile network operator, Bakcell says that it has launched an EDGE upgrade to its network. The network upgrade was provided by Nokia Siemens Networks as part of a general contract which also included a gsm network expansion.  more

Nokia Siemens Completes 2nd Phase of China Mobile TD-SCDMA Rollout

Nokia Siemens Networks has announced that it is one of first vendors to complete phase two deployment of China Mobile's 3G network, based on TD-SCDMA technology. Nokia Siemens Networks has been working with China Mobile subsidiaries Fujian Mobile, Henan Mobile, Jiangxi Mobile and Hainan Mobile to deploy their respective 3G networks.  more

Record year for GSM rollouts, more to come with 3G buildouts in China, India

Market research firm Infonetics Research released the fourth quarteredition of its Mobile Infrastructure and Subscribers report and noted that the worldwide mobile network infrastructure equipment market grew 6% to US$50.8 billion in 2008 over 2007, and will continue to grow in 2009 and 2010.  more

Nokia Siemens Networks Wins Chinese Contracts Worth $1.1 Billion

China Mobile and China Unicom have separately signed agreements to purchase 2G and 3G mobile equipments and services from Nokia Siemens Networks during 2009. Under the framework agreements Nokia Siemens Networks will roll out WCDMA networks for China Unicom in 11 provinces across China. In addition, it will provide China Mobile with TD-SCDMA and gsm networks.  more

Africell chooses Nokia Siemens Networks for 3GPP Mobile Softswitches

Nokia Siemens Networks says that it has won a follow on contract from Africell to deploy a 3GPP mobile softswitch in Gambia and Sierra Leone. With market share of 67% in Gambia and 45% in Sierra Leone, Africell is deploying Nokia Siemens Networks softswitching solution in order to meet subscriber's growing demand and contribute to the networks' efficiency.  more
