Indian telecom equipment beats downturn; grows 20% to nearly $25 billion
The Indian telecom equipment industry reported a 20% growth in revenues to comfortably cross the US$24 billion mark during FY 2008-09 compared to a 24% growth recorded in the previous financial year (2007-08). Indian trade magazine, Voice&Data said that the result was not surprising because despite overall economic slowdown, India has been witnessing over 10 million month-on-month new mobile subscriber additions, and telecom operators have been buying equipment to expand their networks. more

Motorola Wins $310 Million Contract in China
Motorola says that it has signed a one-year frame agreement with China Mobile Communications Corporation (the parent to Hong Kong listed China Mobile Ltd.) to provide mobile telecommunication equipment and services. The frame agreement value is estimated to be $310 million. more

Motorola Wins Chinese 3G Contract
Motorola says that it has won a W-CDMA contract with China Unicom for an undisclosed amount. Under the contract, Motorola will provide China Unicom with W-CDMA radio access network equipment, packet switched core network (PS core), and 2G/3G interoperability functions that will enable the integration of China Unicom's gsm and W-CDMA networks. more

Motorola Wins Saudi Network Expansion Contract
Motorola says that it has won a contract worth approximately SA435 million (US$116 million) with Saudi Arabia's Etihad Etisalat (Mobily) to improve gsm coverage in the Northwest and Southwest regions of the Kingdom. The contract marks the fifth major turnkey gsm network expansion that Mobily has undertaken with Motorola in the past four years. more

Smartphone sales buck the recession
A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession. more

HTC Maple Phone Rumoured to Make Debut at CTIA Show
Taiwan's High Tech Computer (HTC) is reported to be planning to show off a BlackBerry style handset at the CTIA Wireless 2009 trade show this coming April. Citing a report by the Chinese language Economic Daily News (EDN), Digitimes said that the company is in talks with four US operators to sell the handset, codenamed "Maple". more

Chinese Handset Production Growth Down to Single Figures
China's CCID Consulting has reported that after a period of rapid growth over the past few years, the Chinese mobile handset chips market experienced a conspicuous decline in 2008. The research firm predicts that the scale of Chinese mobile phone chips market is expected to reach RMB 110 billion (US$16 billion), up by 6%, down to single-digit growth for the first time. more

Motorola says that it has opened a LTE trial network and testing lab in Swindon, UK. This latest expansion of Motorola's LTE trial facilities offers operators the ability to engage in LTE technology field trials and detailed real-world equipment testing at the UK site. Additionally, Motorola can host the core elements of the LTE network for operators that require a hosted LTE trial in EMEA. more

China's Handset Industry Growth Slowed in Second Half of 2008
According to statistics of the ITIS project - a project initiated by Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs and conducted by Taipei-based MIC - China's mobile phone industry reached a shipment volume of 175.2 million units in the third quarter of 2008, representing 6.2% sequential growth and 4.3% year-on-year growth. The industry's growth rate, which peaked in 2006, gradually slowed down to mid-single digits. This indicated that the Chinese mobile phone industry was significantly impacted by a slowdown in global market demand. more
