Cell Base Station Market Retracts Dramatically as 3G Rollout Frenzy Cools
After many years of rapid growth, the worldwide cellular base station market revenue will decline 22% in 2009, with shipments falling from the high levels of the 3G rollout frenzy of the last few years, reports In-Stat. Declining base station shipments are one clear reason for the revenue decline. However, intense competition from Chinese equipment manufacturers ZTE and Huawei have pressured base station selling prices, as operators demand that infrastructure manufacturers decrease costs. more
Huawei Launches Vodafone Co-Developed Base Station for Rural Areas
Huawei says that it has launched a 2G base station (BTS) designed for use in rural communities in developing markets. The “Easygsm BTS” is an All IP-based compact BTS, and was co-designed and developed in collaboration with Vodafone in the two firms’ joint Radio Mobile Innovation Centre based in Madrid, Spain. more

Vietnamese Network Signs Network Upgrade Contract
Vietnam's Vinaphone has contracted with Alcatel-Lucent to upgrade its gsm network in 16 northern provinces with EDGE data services. The contract was signed through Alcatel-Lucent's Chinese subsidiary, Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell. The deployment is currently underway and the expanded network will begin providing commercial services in April 2009. more

Nortel Software Upgrade Reduces GSM Base Station Power Consumption
Nortel is launching a "Smart Power Management" software platform that the company says helps reduce radio network power consumption in gsm networks and delivers significant energy and cost-savings for mobile operators. Power reductions that can be achieved through this solution were demonstrated in a trial conducted in February 2009 with China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) - the parent company of Hong Kong listed China Mobile. more

China Unicom Selects Alcatel-Lucent to Deploy 3G Networks in 14 Provinces
