Cell Base Station Market Retracts Dramatically as 3G Rollout Frenzy Cools

After many years of rapid growth, the worldwide cellular base station market revenue will decline 22% in 2009, with shipments falling from the high levels of the 3G rollout frenzy of the last few years, reports In-Stat. Declining base station shipments are one clear reason for the revenue decline. However, intense competition from Chinese equipment manufacturers ZTE and Huawei have pressured base station selling prices, as operators demand that infrastructure manufacturers decrease costs.  more

Ericsson to cover Faroe Islands and its offshore with mobile broadband

Ericsson has signed an eight-year contract with Faroe Islands based operator, Faroese Telecom to build and deploy a WCDMA/HSPA network for both the 2100MHz and 900MHz frequencies. This will enable Faroese Telecom to deliver high-speed mobile broadband services to remote areas across the Faroe Islands and even offshore platforms in the North Atlantic.  more

New Technology Could Double 3G Network Voice Call Capacity

Finnish operator Elisa and Nokia Siemens Networks have demonstrated a new technology that allows operators to increase voice capacity of their 3G networks, potentially up to double the baseline capacity. The trial call was conducted in Elisa's live 3G network using R&D prototype devices supplied by Nokia. In technical terms the demonstration was of the world's first circuit switched call over a high speed packet access network (CSoHSPA).  more

Mongolia Gets HSPA Network Upgrade

Mongolian operator MobiCom has launched a HSPA upgrade, with the network supplied by Ericsson. The launch enables MobiCom to introduce mobile broadband services to its subscribers across Mongolia, starting in the capital Ulaanbaatar where about 40 percent of the country's 3 million inhabitants live.  more

ZTE First-Quarter Profits Up by 29%

China's ZTE has reported that its first-quarter revenues reached RMB 11.67 billion (US$1.71 billion), representing an increase of 35% compared with the same period last year. Net profit was RMB 78.66 million (US$11.54 million), representing an increase of 29.17% compared with the same period last year.  more

Motorola Wins Chinese 3G Contract

Motorola says that it has won a W-CDMA contract with China Unicom for an undisclosed amount. Under the contract, Motorola will provide China Unicom with W-CDMA radio access network equipment, packet switched core network (PS core), and 2G/3G interoperability functions that will enable the integration of China Unicom's gsm and W-CDMA networks.  more

Nokia Shows Off 3rd NFC Capable Mobile Phone

Nokia has shown off its third fully integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile phone, the Nokia 6216 classic. The new arrival is Nokia's first SIM-based NFC device which enables operators to build NFC services on to the SIM card. The Nokia 6216 classic is expected to start shipping in the third quarter of 2009 in select markets with an estimated retail price of EUR 150 before taxes and subsidies.  more

EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies

Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007.  more

VivaCell Launches 3G Coverage in Armenia

Armenian network operator, VivaCell-MTS has announced the launch of its 3G network - covering the capital city, Yerevan along with Gyumri and Vanadzor. Although it can be presumed that coverage will be expanded, the operator did not outline any details.  more
