Egypt's Mobinil Does Not Expect a Profitable 3G Network

North Korea and China Discuss Radio Frequency Management

Bangladesh network relaunch

Egypt's Orascom Telecom Holding have launched their GSM mobile services in Bangladesh through its wholly owned subsidiary which operates under the name Banglalink. The network operator launched in nine major cities and plans to extend its services nationwide by the end of this year. OTH expects its subsidiary to invest over US$200 million in expanding its network coverage and capacity and deploying its services during the coming years. more

Tunisia awards second GSM license

Menareport has reported that Egypt's Orascom Telecom has won the second GSM license in Tunisia. Menareport says that the company offered US$454 million for the license. Orascom Telecom's stake in the license is worth US$50 million, and the remaining US$404 million is reportedly financed by various Tunisian and Arab financial institutions, reported Al-Alam Al-Yaum. more

Wataniya may have won Tunisian GSM license

Kuwait's Wataniya Telecom has emerged as the highest bidder for Tunisia's second GSM license according to an article in the Middle East Economic Digest. The paper reported that Telefonica was second with Egypt's Orascom Telecom coming third. more

LCC International has been selected by Orascom Telecom Algeria "OTA", the leading Egyptian mobile phone operator who won Algeria's second GSM license in July 2001, to provide turn-key deployment services for the eastern regions of its network. more

Tunisia delays GSM tender

The Tunisian Telecommunications Ministry has announced that it is delaying the tender of the country's second GSM license by a month to February 9th next year. The tender was due to close on January 10th, and the delay was apparently requested by the interested bidders. The ministry did not say who the interested parties are, but it is widely expected that Telefonica will be bidding again after its last offer was rejected. Orascom Telecom is also understood to be interested in bidding, in a consortium with local companies. The state owned Tunisia Telecom is the only provider of mobile phones in the market and there is a waiting list of some 700,000 customers for a cell phone." more
