Iran Cancels 3rd Mobile License - to Hold New Tender

The Iranian government has reportedly stripped Zain of its mobile license in the country, although there seems to be some confusion about whether the company ever had the license in the first place. The local Poul newspaper quoted Iranian Telecommunication Minister Mohammad Soleimani as saying that another tender would be held to find a new partner for the development of the much-delayed project. The report gave no further details.  more

New GSM Operator for Afghanistan

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) based, Etisalat says that it has secured a GSM license in Afghanistan for a license fee of US$40 million. The agreement was signed by HE Amirzai Sangin, Minister of Communication, Afghanistan, and Mohammad Hassan Omran, Chairman of Etisalat, at the Emirates Palace Hotel, Abu Dhabi. more

Second GSM License for the United Arab Emirates

A second GSM license has been formally granted to Emirates Integrated Telecommunication Company, which says it plans to launch services later this year under the "Du" brand name. EITC Chairman Ahmad Bin Byat said the signing of the full services telecom licence by the UAE Supreme Committee for the Supervision of the Telecommunications Sector (SCSTS) marked a new era in telecommunications in the UAE. Saudi Arabia's Fixed Lines Growth Stalls As GSM Booms

Propelled to new heights by competition, GSM lines in Saudi Arabia grew at a high 44.8% rate in the first eleven months of 2005 to reach 13.3 million. Fixed line, however, grew at a meager 2.5% in the first nine months of 2005 according to a report from the Arab Advisors Group. During the period between 2002 and 2004, Saudi Telecom's mainlines subscribers grew at a low CAGR of 5.5%, reaching around 3.695 million subscribers. After witnessing a slight increase in the growth rates in 2003 and 2004, The first nine months of year 2005, showed the mainlines growth rate is to decline again, as the mainlines grew by 92 thousand translating into a 2.5% growth in the first nine months of 2005. more

Roaming deal for new Saudi network

Saudi Arabia's Saudi Telecommunications Company (STC) and Etihad Etisalat have signed an agreement to permit national roaming for Etisalat customers on STC's network. Etisalat recently secured a GSM license in Saudi Arabia and is now building out its network. more
