Iraq Planning to Award Two Additional Mobile Licenses

Iran Cancels 3rd Mobile License - to Hold New Tender

The Iranian government has reportedly stripped Zain of its mobile license in the country, although there seems to be some confusion about whether the company ever had the license in the first place. The local Poul newspaper quoted Iranian Telecommunication Minister Mohammad Soleimani as saying that another tender would be held to find a new partner for the development of the much-delayed project. The report gave no further details.  more

Three Bidders Win Addition Radio Spectrum in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's telecoms regulator has concluded an auction of radio spectrum that started earlier this week - stating that three mobile network operators have successfully bid for a total of 9.6 MHz of radio spectrum in the 1800 MHz frequency band at a total of upfront spectrum utilization fee of HK$46.1 million (US$5.95 million).  more

Taiwan Debates Renewing GSM Licenses in 2012

There is a dispute amongst Taiwan's mobile network operators over the fate of the existing GSM licenses which are due to expire in 2012. The incumbent holders want them renewed, while the 3G and WiMAX license holders want the licenses terminated and the radio spectrum refarmed to all the companies.  more

Etisalat Blames Local Partner for Loss of Iranian License

Zain Invests in Moroccan Mobile Operator

Kuwait based Zain has announced plans to take an equity stake equivalent to 15.5% in Moroccan mobile network operator, Wana. Under the terms of the investment, Zain is setting up a 50:50 joint venture with the Al Ajial Investment Fund Holding, and it is that joint-venture which will take a 31% stake in the firm for US$324 million.  more

Orange Launches a GSM Network in Uganda

France Telecom, through its Orange brand has launched a new network in Uganda. Last October, France Telecom took over the national GSM license held by Hits Telecom Uganda after buying a 53% stake in the firm.  more

Egypt's Mobinil Does Not Expect a Profitable 3G Network

Ericsson deploys GSM/EDGE network for Digicel in Panama

Ericsson has signed a sole-supplier agreement with Digicel Group for the nationwide deployment of a GSM/EDGE network in Panama. The value of the contract was not disclosed, although it was recently reported that Digicel is planning to spend US$334 million on its Panama launch.  more
