Improving Mobile Phone Coverage Across Lake Victoria
Mobile phone coverage across Africa's Lake Victoria is to be expanded in a joint venture between Zain, and Ericsson, in an initiative coordinated by the GSM Association. The coverage will comprise the area of the lake where 80 percent of fishing activities take place, allowing communication and SMS exchange to and from phones. This enhancement will fuel economic and social development of the lakeside communities and potentially reduce the number of fishing-related deaths each year. more

Over 450 telecommunications professionals gathered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for the opening of East Africa Com, the region's annual event for the telecommunications industry. A $50 Billion Investment to Blanket Africa With Mobile Phones
At the Connect Africa summit, the GSM Association says that the mobile industry plans to invest more than $50 billion in sub-Saharan Africa over the next five years to provide more than 90% of the population with mobile coverage. The figure comes from a Frontier Economics study commissioned by the GSA, and is based on forecasts supplied by mobile operators serving approximately 70% of sub-Saharan Africa's mobile users today. more
