EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies

Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007.  more

GSMA Picks LG Phones to Lead HSPA Promotions

The GSM Association (GSMA) has announced that a panel comprising of nine operators has selected two mobile phones developed by LG Electronics as the winning products to spearhead its GSMA's Horizon Phone initiative - which aims to promote HSPA services in the 850Mhz band.  more

GSMA Launches Mobile Alliance Against Child Sexual Abuse

The GSM Association, the global trade association for mobile operators, has launched the Mobile Alliance against Child Sexual Abuse Content to obstruct the use of the mobile environment by individuals or organisations wishing to consume or profit from child sexual abuse content. While the vast majority of child sexual abuse content is today accessed through conventional connections to the Internet, there is a danger that the broadband networks now being rolled out by mobile operators could be misused in the same way.  more

The NGMN Alliance Oulines Development Plans for Next Year

The NGMN Alliance - a group of network operators - says that it has defined its roadmap for the year ahead following a meeting of all its partners. The purpose of this forum was to ensure that the vision of the NGMN Alliance, namely, realisation of the global mobile information society with its many benefits for the end users, is on track. Western Union Working on Global Mobile Money Transfer Service

The GSM Association (GSMA) and Western Union have jointly announced an agreement to facilitate the development of cross-border mobile money transfer services. Western Union and the GSMA are to develop a commercial and technical framework that mobile operators can use to deploy services that enable consumers to send and receive low-denomination, high-frequency money transfers using their mobile phones.  more

Low-Cost 3G Handset Sales Commence

The GSM Association says that the winning handset in the GSMA's "3G for All programme", the LG-KU250, is now on sale across the globe. GSM Association Aims for Global Point of Sale Purchases by Mobile Phone

The worldwide use of mobile phones for payments at point of sale is the aim of a new initiative announced by the GSM Association (GSMA), the global trade organization for mobile operators. The 'Pay-Buy Mobile' initiative is a natural progression for the industry, following the GSMA's program - announced last year - to define a common global approach to enabling Near Field Communications (NFC), the technology used to link mobile devices with payment and contactless systems. more
