Argentina Planning Higher Taxes on Mobile Phone Imports

The GSM Association (GSMA) says that it is concerned about plans to raise taxes on mobile phones in Argentina. The bill seeks to extend internal taxes on mobile handsets to a 17% nominal rate for imports and/or sales which are not produced in the Tierra del Fuego special economic zone.  more

Dialog Telekom Chooses GSMA's PathFinder Service

Sri Lanka's Dialog Telekom has signed up to the GSM Association's PathFinder Service, a GSMA-managed service operated by NeuStar that provides the missing link for operators as they make the move to all-IP mobile networks, tackling critical issues around routing, interoperability, number resolution and service and revenue assurance. By automatically translating phone numbers into IP addresses, PathFinder will help Dialog Telekom to facilitate the delivery of a wide variety of new feature rich IP-based services as well as ensure quality of service.  more

Sucessful Trials of SIP-I for Voice Calls on GSM Networks

The GSM Association has completed successful trials of voice calls based on the SIP-I protocol between core networks supplied by Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks. Hosted by TeliaSonera in their Finnish and Swedish laboratories, the trials are a significant step towards the use of SIP-I to control the transmission of packet-based voice between mobile networks.  more

European Mobile Broadband Services Jeopardised By Regulation

EuropeÃ's mobile industry is cutting back spending on new networks and services as a growing regulatory burden from the European Union puts profitability under pressure - claims the GSM Association. To justify the imposition of retail price caps, the European Commission has claimed that mobile operators are making excessive profits, but the European mobile industryÃ's return on capital employed (ROCE) was just 9% in 2006 compared with more than 20% in software, pharmaceuticals and several other sectors, according to management consultancy A.T.
