Nokia Shows Off 7 New Low-Cost Phones and Services
Nokia has shown off a range of affordable mobile phones and services which the company says are specifically desisgned for people in emerging markets. In addition to Nokia's lowest cost handset to date, as well as its first handset for emerging markets with an integrated digital music player, Nokia unveiled a range of mobile internet services aimed at rural customers. Estimated retail prices of the new devices range from €25 to €90, with several models expected to begin shipping in 2008. Nokia's suite of Internet services for emerging markets will be available beginning in 2009. more

Encypted SMS as a Backup for Mobile Data Applications
Mobile applications developer, Masabi says that it has overcome an obstacle to m-commerce application uptake by using encrypted SMS to transfer data. Following a range of commercial and pilot launches the company found that providing SMS as a data option solves connection issues for the (claimed) 40-50% of java application users who cannot connect through gprs or 3G. more

China Unicom Doubles First Half Profits
China Unicom has reported a doubling of its first half profits as the company nears the completion of its merger with landline operator, China Netcom. The company said that earnings for the six months through June 30 were RMB4.42 billion ($642 million), up from the RMB2.2 billion in the same period last year, and beating the average forecast of RMB4.18 billion from seven analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires. Revenues rose by 4% to RMB35.1 billion ($5.1 billion). more
