Zain successfully trials HSPA+ in a live 3G network
Zain Saudi Arabia has concluded trials of a Nokia Siemens Networks supplied Internet-HSPA (I-HSPA) software upgrade within Zain's existing radio access network. The trial introduced a simple, flat architecture demonstrating how traffic can bypass the Radio Network Controller (RNC) and the Serving gprs Support Node (SGSN), to deliver improved data transmission speeds. Because of the re-routing, there is no need to build in additional capacity, in effect reducing the OPEX and CAPEX. more

Tunisian Operator Upgrades GPRS Core Network
Tunisian mobile operator, Tunisiana has modernized its gprs core network following an upgrade contract which was awarded to Nokia Siemens Networks. The company installed its Flexi ISN, which performs gprs Gateway Service Node (GGSN) and data charging functionalities, and is fully integrated with the existing Nokia Siemens Networks charge@once prepaid solution to enable flexible charging of data services. more

Mobile Operators' 3G CAPEX Rising Sharply
Two years ago, announcements of capital spending on 3G deployments were mainly made by the largest operators in the most developed nations, but today many smaller and incumbent operators in developing and less saturated markets are also increasing CAPEX as they roll out 3G networks. Because 3G signals travel shorter distances than 2G's, particularly in the case of W-CDMA, more cell sites are needed: 3G can require four to five times as many base stations to obtain the same coverage as 2G networks. more
