Survey confirms 130 EDGE network launches in past year

The latest survey of GSM/EDGE network deployments by the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has confirmed that 443 EDGE networks are now commercially launched in 181 countries, compared to 313 commercial networks in 147 countries reported by GSA one year ago.  more

VoIP provider Skype has confirmed speculation and announced that it has launched a Skype application for the Apple iPhone, which will be available on the Apple App Store from today. The app also adds Skype calling and instant messaging to any second generation iPod touch with a compatible headset and microphone.  more

EDGE Launches in Barbados

Digicel Barbados has announced the launch of EDGE services on its network. DigicelÃ's head of marketing, Robert Chase, said the system, launched earlier this week, is an upgrade of the current gprs technology and that the mobile company is proud to be the first on the island to offer it. Chase noted: "Digicel recently launched this technology in St Lucia and it has gotten great reviews from our customers there".  more

European Bank Lends to Brazilian Operator for GSM Expansion

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is lending a total of EUR 200 million to TIM Celular and its subsidiary TIM Nordeste for the expansion of their mobile digital communication networks in Brazil using 2G and 3G technologies.
