Wireless Data Roaming Wins Gold During Beijing Olympics
With athletes and sports fans pouring in from all over the world to attend the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, wireless data roaming turned in a gold medal performance according to data released today from data roaming exchange provider, Aicent. Data from AicentÃ's roaming eXchange services shows a surge in wireless data roaming traffic exceeding 40 percent over the same period of days the month before. This increase in roaming traffic resulted in more than 332 GB of data being exchanged between 225 mobile operators in 106 different countries on the Aicent network. more

China Unicom Doubles First Half Profits
China Unicom has reported a doubling of its first half profits as the company nears the completion of its merger with landline operator, China Netcom. The company said that earnings for the six months through June 30 were RMB4.42 billion ($642 million), up from the RMB2.2 billion in the same period last year, and beating the average forecast of RMB4.18 billion from seven analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires. Revenues rose by 4% to RMB35.1 billion ($5.1 billion). more

Telstra Activates "3G Direct Tunnel" on its HSDPA Network
Australia's Telstra has activated an important new feature for the Mobile Packet Core network called 3G Direct Tunnel on their WCDMA/HSPA network. The equipment for this was provided by Ericsson. The 3G Direct Tunnel feature provides a direct connection between the 3G networks RNC (Radio Network Controller) and GGSN (Gateway gprs Support Node), hence capacity increase to Telstra's mobile packet core network. more
