Nortel Wins Czech GSM-R Expansion Contract

Czech Railways has selected Nortel GSM-R technology to provide wireless communications to the 207 km Czech section of the International Railway Corridor IV between Austria and Poland. Nortel partner Kapsch CarrierCom will supply and deploy the network. The project began in June 2009 and is scheduled for completion by end of 2009.  more

Survey confirms 130 EDGE network launches in past year

The latest survey of GSM/EDGE network deployments by the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has confirmed that 443 EDGE networks are now commercially launched in 181 countries, compared to 313 commercial networks in 147 countries reported by GSA one year ago.  more

Cook Islands May Break Up Mobile Network Monopoly

The mobile network monopoly on the South Pacific's Cook Islands could be broken after a proposal is made to the government by Kukicel to allow it to enter the market. The island nation currently has just the one operator, Telecom Cook Islands, which is owned by Telecom New Zealand (60%) and the Cook Islands government (40%).  more

Zain successfully trials HSPA+ in a live 3G network

Zain Saudi Arabia has concluded trials of a Nokia Siemens Networks supplied Internet-HSPA (I-HSPA) software upgrade within Zain's existing radio access network. The trial introduced a simple, flat architecture demonstrating how traffic can bypass the Radio Network Controller (RNC) and the Serving gprs Support Node (SGSN), to deliver improved data transmission speeds. Because of the re-routing, there is no need to build in additional capacity, in effect reducing the OPEX and CAPEX.  more

VoIP provider Skype has confirmed speculation and announced that it has launched a Skype application for the Apple iPhone, which will be available on the Apple App Store from today.
