Are Smartphones Immune to the Financial Crisis in Western Europe?

The market for Western European converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 31.9 million units, 36.1% higher than the 23.5 million units shipped in 2007.  more

LG Offers More Details of Flagship Touchscreen Phone

LG has given more details of the LG ARENA (LG-KM900) phone, which was previewed last week. Dell Smartphone Rumours Resurface

The persistent rumours that computer maker, Dell is preparing to launch a range of mobile phones got another boost when it was reported that the firm could launch its first handsets next month. A report in the Wall Street Journal said that Dell has had a group of engineers working on the phones for more than a year from an office in the Chicago area.  more

Financial Crisis Hits Mobile Phone Sales as Q3 Shipment Growth Slows

The worldwide mobile phone industry felt the impact of the global financial crisis in the third quarter of 2008 (3Q08) as total handset shipments were down significantly over previous quarters. Mobile phone manufacturers shipped a total of 299.0 million handsets in 3Q08, up 3.2% from last year, and down -0.4% over 2Q08. The third quarter of the year has historically been a ramp-up quarter as manufacturers load their sales channels with handsets in preparation for the holiday season, producing year-over-year growth rates as high as 20% as a result. This year has not witnessed a similar ramp up, largely due to the current economic situation.  more

T-Mobile Expected to Sell Google Phone for Under $200

As T-Mobile USA prepares to show off the first version of the so-called, google Phone next week, it has been reported that the company is aiming to sell the smartphone for US$199 with a contract. The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources disclosed the retail price, and said that T-Mobile would launch it with an aggressively priced data tariff.  more

T-Mobile Planning "Google Phone" Launch at End of Sept - report

T-Mobile USA is reported to be planning a launch of its first google Android phone within just a few weeks. Sources told the Reuters news agency that the mobile operator would make an announcement in New York City, and said that Sept 23rd was the probable date for the press conference.  more
