Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown

Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, iSuppli is predicting. iSuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. A more pessimistic outlook calls for growth of only 6 percent this year, reaching 183.9 million units.  more

Financial Crisis Hits Mobile Phone Sales as Q3 Shipment Growth Slows

The worldwide mobile phone industry felt the impact of the global financial crisis in the third quarter of 2008 (3Q08) as total handset shipments were down significantly over previous quarters. Mobile phone manufacturers shipped a total of 299.0 million handsets in 3Q08, up 3.2% from last year, and down -0.4% over 2Q08. The third quarter of the year has historically been a ramp-up quarter as manufacturers load their sales channels with handsets in preparation for the holiday season, producing year-over-year growth rates as high as 20% as a result. This year has not witnessed a similar ramp up, largely due to the current economic situation.  more

Hutchison Whampoa Launches Handset Subsidiary

Hutchison Whampoa has launched its own mobile phone subsidiary, INQ Mobile to develop phones for its 3G networks worldwide. The company aims to launch a range of low to mid-priced handsets based largely on free operating systems, likely to be either Linux or the google backed Android OS - and will be based on Qualcomm chips.  more

Motorola Reported to be Working on a "Google Phone"

Qualcomm Working on Google Android Phone

Qualcomm has confirmed that it is working on an iPhone rival platform which would be based on the google supported open-source Android operating system. Chief Operating Officer Sanjay Jha, speaking at an analysts presentation said that the company anticipates that a large number of Android phones would run on Qualcomm platforms.  more
