MANILA (Dow Jones)--Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (TEL.PH), or PLDT, made a record net profit of PHP28.04 billion ($512 million) in 2004, with its robust cellular operations allowing it to beat market expectations and declare a cash dividend for the first time in four years. more
Terrorists strike at cellular networks
Five northern Philippine provinces had their cellular networks disrupted following suspected terrorist attacks on the cellular infrastructure. However, the disruption was minimal after the networks were able to re-route traffic to adjacent cells. As the incident occurred at night, the network traffic was low, so no congestion problems were reported. A communist rebel group, the New People's Army is suspected of carrying out the attack, which resulted in the buildings being doused in gasoline and set on fire. No one was hurt in the attacks which disrupted service in Pampanga, Tarlac, Bataan, Nueva Ecija and Pangasinan provinces. Four of the sites belonged to Smart Communications while two others belonged to Globe Telecom and Pilipino Telephone." more
