Giesecke & Devrient Holds Off Challenge from Oberthur Technologies
Number three smart card manufacturer Oberthur Technologies (up 1.4% YOY in 2008) closed the gap on Giesecke & Devrient in second place last year to less than one percent market share difference following its acquisition of XPonCard. However, the latest market analysis from IMS Research shows that the German company, after reporting record turnover and profits in 2008, maintained its position as the second largest manufacturer of smart cards globally, behind market leader Gemalto. Sagem Orga (up 1.3%) and Watchdata Systems (up 1.5%) were the other two companies calculated to have made the biggest gains last year. more

Plans for SIM Storage in Near Field Enabled Handsets
Vodafone and the smart card manufacturer, Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) have announced that they plan to jointly develop a secure storage element for NFC-enabled mobile phones. This element, intended for trusted applications in NFC mobile devices, is the SIM card, with Vodafone and G&D driving the necessary standardization forward. NFC is a new, wireless-based technology that enables contactless transmission of data between two NFC devices over short distances (i.e., a few centimeters). more

TeliaSonera Tests 1GB Memory SIM Cards
TeliaSonera says that it is the first operator in the Nordic and Baltic region to trial new multimedia SIM cards which in the future will make it easier for users to transfer stored information and services between different mobiles.
"To us, the multimedia SIM card represents an important link to our wireless customers. By being first in the Nordic and Baltic region in trialling the new multimedia SIM card at this early stage we continue in our ambition to provide our customers with simplicity and easy to use services", says Lars Klasson, Head of Products & Production in Business Area Mobility Services in TeliaSonera.
The internal pilot trial will be conducted during 2007 with the new multimedia SIM cards, called GalaxSIM, together with Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), the world's second largest manufacturer of smart cards. more

Vodafone Italy recently began offering its wireless customers a way to watch TV on their cell phones through its Vodafone SKY TV service. Much like pay-TV on an ordinary television set, the channels come in the form of encrypted broadcasts. The system of access rights offered by Nagravision handles the task of decoding the signal inside the mobile handset. MasterCard Tests NFC Payments with Nokia Handsets
The credit card network, MasterCard says that it has started conducting a consumer trial in Dallas, Texas, of Near Field Communications (NFC)-enabled mobile phones with MasterCard PayPass capability. Up to 500 participants from the 7-Eleven Speak Out wireless program are getting NFC-enabled Nokia 3220 mobile phones and instructions on how to wirelessly enhance them with MasterCard PayPass payment functionality, via Giesecke & Devrient (G&D)'s new secure chip management solution. more

SIM Card Factory Built in India
The SIM Card vendor, Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) says that it is opening a new factory in India. When completed, the new production facility will be the largest of its kind in India. Russia's Sitronics, German co invest 16 mln euro in SIM-producing JV "
