MP3 player segment still second largest in CE market
With the increase in mobile phones with built-in music players, it is interesting to see that according to a gfk study, MP3/4 Players remain the second largest product group within the UK Consumer Electronics (CE) market, despite an 8% decline in value (Y/E September 2007) to £657 million. 8.5 million MP3/4 players were sold in the Y/E September 2007 - a 6% increase on the previous year. more

Brits Think the iPhone is "Too Expensive"
New research from gfk NOP shows that UK consumers perceive the iPhone as being too expensive to tempt a purchase. The research, which polled 500 people across the UK, suggest that, despite the 'Apple cult' fans, who were prepared to queue overnight to be the first to buy the iPhone, uptake in the wider public will be limited. Of those surveyed, a huge 72% said that they would not buy one, due to the price. more

Users Fed up with Marketing Spam from Mobile Service Providers
Results of a gfk NOP survey commissioned by Pontis, a provider of Marketing Delivery Platforms, amongst 752 mobile phone users in the UK reveals a deep dissatisfaction amongst the public with the way that mobile service providers are currently marketing their voice and data services. 70% of mobile phone users consider the marketing offers they receive not to be relevant to them and 64% of these confess to being annoyed by them. Just 11% of those surveyed had ever purchased an item, or signed up for a special promotion or bundle as a result of an online promotion or offer from their mobile service provider. more

Turkey Reports 4.3 Million Handsets Sold up to June 2007
A total of 4.3 million mobile phones were sold in Turkey in the first five months of this year reports the Turkish Daily News, citing a report by gfk Turkiye. Nokia is still the number one vendor with a market share in excess of 50%, and Sony Ericsson is ranked at third place. The newspaper notes that South Korean vendors are in second place, but doesn't confirm how that share is broken down. Motorola has slumped from approximately 10% to just 1.3% this year. more

Business Users Dominate 3G Card Sales - report
2006 has seen an explosion of sales of equipment allowing Nomadic wireless data usage by consumers, according to figures released today by leading market research firm gfk. Sales of equipment for nomadic usage within the UK, allowing Internet access from Wi-Fi hotspot to hotspot are booming. Wireless Routers saw a 108% increase in the first quarter of 2006 compared to the same period in 2005. In total, 380,000 units were sold, worth US$45 million. Similarly, sales of Wireless Network Interface Cards increased by 87% to 525,000 units, worth US$24 million, in the same periods. more

Motorola outstrips Samsung in Vietnam
Nokia still dominates with 50% of the Vietnamese market share, a drop of 2% over February 2006. While Samsung and Sony Ericsson lost 1% of the market share each, falling to 18% and 3% respectively, Motorola gained 4% to end at 22%. The company held only 10.85 of the market last year and only 1.8% in 2004, ranking sixth in Vietnam after Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Siemens, and LG. more
