Verizon Wireless Selects Gemalto to Provide OTA and UICC for LTE Network

gemalto has won a contract from Verizon Wireless to provide an over-the-air (OTA) platform and LTE Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) for the operator's LTE network upgrade. The UICC will be used inside mobile devices to manage subscriber information exchange – such as transferring contacts and preferences from one device to another – while providing secure access to Verizon Wireless' LTE network.  more

Just Under 3 Billion SIM Cards Shipped in 2008

SIMalliance, the global association of SIM card manufacturers has reported that global SIM card shipments exceeded 2.9 billion units during 2008, with strong demand from the emerging markets of India, China, Asia Pacific and Latin America contributing to a 29 per cent increase on shipments over the previous year.  more

Taiwan Mobile to Offer SIM based NFC Services

Smartcard firm, gemalto has been chosen by Taiwan Mobile to provide the world's first commercial NFC (Near Field Communication) SIM-based mobile contactless system. The development is important as it avoids the need for customers to have to upgrade their handset, as they can simply get a new SIM card. This should make it possible for operators to speed up the rollout of the service - if they choose to.  more

Improving SIM/Over-The-Air Roaming Provision

Starhome says that it is uniting gemalto's SIM/OTA applications with it's server logic, to enable operators to build on existing inbound and outbound roaming services as well as offer enhanced capabilities for future services. Starhome has already incorporated gemalto's SIM/OTA facilities into its Intelligent Preferred Network (IPN) solution, which lets mobile operators manage the subscribers' registration process as they roam in visited networks.  more

40 Days and Nights to Update 8 Million SIM Cards

gemalto says that it has completed a project, which updated nearly 8 million SIM cards belonging to subscribers of Thailand's Advanced Info Service (AIS). By updating the cards over the air, there was no need for the operator to mail out replacement cards or ask customers to come into an AIS point of sale. The entire campaign, which otherwise would have taken many months, was completed in less than 40 days.

The OTA campaign was rolled out on the back of a decision from the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) in Thailand to shift from a 9-digit, to a 10-digit dialing system so as to meet the telecommunications needs of the country for the next 30 years. more

Network Rebranding Leads to 2 Million SIM Updates

gemalto says that it has provided Sonatel in Senegal and Ikatel in Mali with operated services to assist them in their rebranding campaign. Now renamed Orange Senegal and Orange Mali, both operators have selected gemalto's Over-the-Air (OTA) management solution to seamlessly update all of the SIM-based devices in the field. With over 2 million units updated in a few days, gemalto enabled Orange Senegal and Orange Mali to raise awareness of their new commercial brand and inform their subscribers in a direct and efficient way. more

Gemalto Wins 3G-Ready, Over-The-Air Platform Project From China Mobile"

gemalto has announced today that its Chinese joint venture, SAIT (Shanghai Axalto IC Card Technology), has been selected to deploy a service delivery platform for Guangdong Mobile, the largest subsidiary of China Mobile. This project is the first 3G-ready SIM service platform to be deployed in China and is fully compatible with all foreseen 3G-network technologies, in particular the Chinese-developed TD-SCDMA technology. more
