Just Under 3 Billion SIM Cards Shipped in 2008
SIMalliance, the global association of SIM card manufacturers has reported that global SIM card shipments exceeded 2.9 billion units during 2008, with strong demand from the emerging markets of India, China, Asia Pacific and Latin America contributing to a 29 per cent increase on shipments over the previous year. more

NXP to Transfer its Mobile Services Business to Gemalto
NXP Semiconductor has announced that it is selling its mobile services business to smartcard vendor, gemalto for an undisclosed amount. The related unit based in France will continue to develop and market software and service solutions compliant with the MIFARE4Mobile interface specifications which manage MIFARE-based applications in Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile devices. more

First MIFARE Compatible SIM-Based Solution for Mobile NFC Services
gemalto, NXP and Infineon have announced they are demonstrating the first mobile contactless solution compliant with the Single Wire Protocol (SWP) standard and compatible with MIFARE infrastructures. NXP's MIFARE contactless technology is widely deployed for transport networks and access management worldwide. Being compatible with MIFARE, in addition to all the ISO 14443 contactless infrastructures, the solution will enable users to benefit from any contactless service on his/her mobile phone. more

Operators to Launch NFC-Based Mobile Payment Services
Over the next several months, 12 mobile operators will run trials of contactless mobile payment services in Australia, France, Ireland, Korea, Malaysia, Norway, The Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey and the U.S. as a precursor to commercial launches. The trials form part of the GSMA's Pay-Buy-Mobile initiative, which is designed to provide a single global approach to enabling contactless payments using a mobile phone. Consumers will be able to use their handsets to quickly, easily and securely pay for goods and services in shops, restaurants and train stations. more

Gemalto Embeds Near Field Capability into SIM Card
Smart card provider, gemalto has announced the successful integration of Japan Credit Bureau's (JCB) contactless payment solution, J/Speedy onto its Near Field Communications (NFC) SIM card. In this way, gemalto has provided both NFC-embedded mobile and SIM-based NFC options supporting two of the industry's most popular contactless standards. Major Trial of Near-Field Payments to Start in France
Six major French banks (BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole and LCL, Credit Mutuel-CIC, Groupe Caisse d'Epargne, La Banque Postale and Societe Generale) as well as four mobile operators (Bouygues Telecom, NRJ Mobile, Orange and SFR) have announced plans to join forces in cooperation with MasterCard Worldwide and Visa Europe to launch at the end of November a large-scale field trial to test mobile contactless payment with 1,000 customers and 200 sales outlets located in the cities of Caen and Strasbourg. more

SIM based "Near Field Communications" Trial for Tawain
The smartcard vendor, gemalto has set up a partnership with Taiwan's Far EasTone Telecommunications to start Asia's first mobile contactless SIM-based NFC (Near Field Communications) trial.
