ZTE Aims to be a Top-5 Phone Manufacturer This Year

China's ZTE is close to breaking into the top-5 of global handset manufacturers after it saw handset shipments jump by 40% in 2008 to reach 45 million units, according to the Taiwan based DigiTimes publication. The company had set itself a target of gaining a top-5 placement by 2011, but did accept that shrinking market share in competitors could bring that date forward.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down by 5% in Q4 '08

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to gartner. Economic Downturn Sparked a Battle for 3rd Place in Mobile Phone Market

Worldwide sales of mobile phones to end-users reached more than 309 million units in the third quarter of 2008, a 6 per cent increase compared to the third quarter of 2007, according to gartner. Growth dipped back into single figures, representing less than half the 16 per cent growth rate of the same period in 2007.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Increased 12% in Q2 of 2008

Worldwide sales of mobile phones reached close to 305 million units in the second quarter of 2008, a 11.8 percent increase over the second quarter of 2007, according to gartner. Sales of mobile phones in the mature markets of Western Europe and North America slightly recovered after a difficult start. Western Europe reached close to 42 million units while North America surpassed 44 million units in the second quarter of 2008.  more

Top Six Vendors Drive Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales in 2005

Worldwide mobile phone sales totaled 816.6 million units in 2005, a 21% increase from 2004, as the leading six vendors increased their share of the market at the detriment of smaller vendors, according to gartner. The top six vendors accounted for 79.4% of worldwide mobile phone sales in 2005. These leaders experienced a steady increase in market share throughout the year, as their market share increased from 78% in the first quarter to 84% in the fourth quarter of 2005. more

Fourth quarter worldwide mobile phone sales totaled 122.6 million units, an increase of 14% vs. the same period last year. gartner Dataquest analysts noted that fourth quarter mobile operator connection growth came in well above industry expectations in almost every region of the world, helping to drive fourth quarter sales up almost 15% sequentially. more
