ZTE Aims to be a Top-5 Phone Manufacturer This Year

China's ZTE is close to breaking into the top-5 of global handset manufacturers after it saw handset shipments jump by 40% in 2008 to reach 45 million units, according to the Taiwan based DigiTimes publication. The company had set itself a target of gaining a top-5 placement by 2011, but did accept that shrinking market share in competitors could bring that date forward.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down by 5% in Q4 '08

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to gartner. Manufacturers continued to struggle against low consumer confidence in both emerging and mature markets.  more

Economic Downturn Sparked a Battle for 3rd Place in Mobile Phone Market

Worldwide sales of mobile phones to end-users reached more than 309 million units in the third quarter of 2008, a 6 per cent increase compared to the third quarter of 2007, according to gartner. Growth dipped back into single figures, representing less than half the 16 per cent growth rate of the same period in 2007.  more

AT&T, Lenovo and Ericsson Offer Embedded 3G Laptops

Laptop manufacturer, Lenovo is to offer a range of  ThinkPad notebook PCs with built-in 3G modems from Ericsson for use on the AT&T Wireless network. All three of the ThinkPad SL notebooks and all notebooks in Lenovo's T and X series are included in the offering. Customers who purchase the ThinkPad notebooks with the embedded mobile broadband and establish an account with AT&T will receive 30 days of free AT&T DataConnect service.  more

Qualcomm Warns of Slowing Handset Replacement Cycle

Qualcomm CEO, Paul Jacobs says that there are signs that mobile phone owners are delaying plans to replace their existing handsets - slowing the replacement cycle. Speaking in an interview on CNBC television, he said that the trend has been most noticeable in Japan and South Korea. However, sales of smartphones appeared to be remaining strong.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Increased 12% in Q2 of 2008

Worldwide sales of mobile phones reached close to 305 million units in the second quarter of 2008, a 11.8 percent increase over the second quarter of 2007, according to gartner. Sales of mobile phones in the mature markets of Western Europe and North America slightly recovered after a difficult start. Western Europe reached close to 42 million units while North America surpassed 44 million units in the second quarter of 2008.  more
