2009 Will Be Year of the Mini-Notebook in Asia Pacific
Shipments of mini-notebooks in Asia Pacific will reach four million units in 2009, growing by a robust 82 per cent over 2008, according to Gartner. Growth will stabilise at 20 per cent or more in 2010 and 2011, when mini-notebooks will account for more than 14 per cent of all mobile PCs shipped. more

European Handheld Demand Evaporates in 3Q06
According to the latest market data from IDC, the European mobile devices market, including standalone handhelds and converged devices, grew by 13% year on year in the third quarter of 2006 as shipments reached 3.84 million units. However, while market performance constituted a significant improvement following the market decline seen in the previous quarter, growth was buoyed solely by healthy converged device growth of 30% year on year as the handheld market declined for a fourth consecutive quarter. more

Nokia Tops Greenpeace Green Ranking
The environmental pressure group, Greenpeace has published a 'Guide to Greener Electronics', which ranks companies on their use of harmful chemicals and electronic waste recycling. The organisation says that the guide will be used to create demand for toxic-free electronics which can be safely recycled, by informing consumers about company performance on these two issues. The scorecard ranks the 14 top mobile and PC producers and currently all fail to get a green ranking. more

Converged Device Shipments Fail to Offset Handheld Volume Declines
According to the latest market data from IDC, the Western European mobile device market (including standalone handhelds and converged devices) suffered a disappointing performance in the second quarter of 2006 as the total market declined by 3% year on year to total 3.3 million units. The handheld market suffered further intensification of the negative growth exhibited since 4Q05 as shipments declined by 49% year on year, while comparatively insubstantial growth for the converged device segment of just 10% year on year meant demand for devices with combined voice and data functionality failed to offset the negative growth of the handheld segment. more

European Converged Device Market Shows Poor Opening Quarter
According to the latest market data from IDC, the Western European mobile device market (including standalone handhelds and converged devices) grew by 25% year on year in the opening quarter of 2006, as total shipments reached 3.2 million units. Significantly, the handheld market failed to recover from the dramatic decline in 4Q05, as shipments of just 549,000 units represented further negative growth of -21% year on year, with only Fujitsu Siemens registering positive growth. Additionally, disappointing growth of 43% and shipments of 2.67 million units for converged devices meant market performance fell below expectations. more

T-Mobile Expanding German HSDPA Coverage
T-Mobile Germany says that it plans to offer HSDPA coverage at the upcoming CeBIT 2006 consumer and trade fair in Hanover. T-Mobile will offer transmission rates of up to 1.8 Mbit/s and uplink speeds of 384 Kbit/s in large parts of the UMTS network. Selected T-Mobile business customers, among them the national rail network, Deutsche Bahn have already been testing the T-Mobile high-speed UMTS network at several locations since the beginning of October. more
