Upwards view: Linux is losing ground

The upwards view of netbooks starts with netbooks and looks up to laptops. It leads to two conclusions. First, the laptop market is becoming increasingly complex, with market segments catered for by a growing variety of low-cost netbooks and laptops. Second, after a strong start, Linux netbooks have now been overtaken by Windows netbooks and Linux is lagging increasingly behind in terms of sales - although Linux's performance in the netbook segment is still outstanding compared to its overall performance in the desktop market.  more

Chinese Handset Production Growth Down to Single Figures

China's CCID Consulting has reported that after a period of rapid growth over the past few years, the Chinese mobile handset chips market experienced a conspicuous decline in 2008. The research firm predicts that the scale of Chinese mobile phone chips market is expected to reach RMB 110 billion (US$16 billion), up by 6%, down to single-digit growth for the first time.  more

Tessera Extends Patent Talks Deadline with Motorola

Tessera Technologies has announced that it has extended its option agreement with Motorola that enables the firm to enter into a pre-negotiated license agreement with Tessera and settle all outstanding litigation between the companies. The option now runs through mid-February 2009. Other detailed terms of the agreements, including option fees, license fees and license royalties, are confidential.  more

Motorola, Qualcomm Win First Stage in Patent Dispute

The USA's International Trade Commission (ITC) has issued an initial finding in a patent lawsuit brought by Tessera Technologies against a raft of companies, including Motorola and Qualcomm - stating that Tessera's asserted patents are valid but are not infringed by the respondents.  more

Freescale and Nivis Combines Wireless Technologies

freescale Semiconductor and Nivis  a developer of wireless network technologies, have announced plans to combine their respective technologies to provide a total wired-to-wireless platform for commercial and industrial sensor mesh networks. The combined hardware/software platform solution includes sensor interface, radio module, router/gateway, security manager and advanced network manager capabilities for emerging wireless standards in the industrial and commercial sector.  more

Freescale Semiconductor Looking to Sell Mobile Chips Division

Computer-chip manufacturer, and former Motorola subsidiary, freescale Semiconductor is looking to sell off its mobile-phone chip division, the company confirmed in a statement. The company is understood to have been hurt by the slowdown in mobile handset sales from Motorola, which remains one of its largest customers. The division generates on average around 20% of the group's revenues.  more

Wireless-Chip Market Outpaced Wireline-Chip Market in 2007

Growing adoption of 3G technologies and feature-rich cell-phone chips led to a 13% increase in sales of cellular baseband processors in 2007, according to The Linley Group. Sales of networking chips, in contrast, declined by about 1% during the same period according to their new report. The slowdown in wired-communications chips is also reflected in the FPGA market as sales of FPGAs for communications systems declined 7%.  more
