Japan Settles on MediaFLO and ISDB-T for Mobile TV Services

­Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has recognized Qualcomm's MediaFLO technology as one of two official technologies for nationwide mobile multimedia broadcasting services in Japan. This milestone signifies that MediaFLO-enabled mobile TV services may be deployed in Japan once spectrum is made available in 2011. The only other mobile broadcast technology recognized by the MIC for this purpose is ISDB-Tmm, an evolution of Japan's digital TV (DTV) standard, ISDB-T.  more

Single Bidder for France's Fourth 3G License

­France's telecoms regulator, ARCEP has confirmed that just one application has been submitted for the country's fourth 3G license. As expected, the application was submitted by this deadline, by Free mobile, a subsidiary fully owned by the Iliad group.  more

Smartphone Downloads from All App Stores to Reach 6.67 Billion in 2014

Smartphone penetration in the U.S. mobile markets is increasing rapidly. For some time, mobile operators have been offering a branded 'catalog' of mobile content and services that could be purchased from the handset itself. However, all that is changing for smartphones, in which newer types of targeted app stores are being introduced to enable the device owner to purchase content from outside the operator environment. The availability of a large number of inexpensive or free mobile applications that leverage the next-generation technical capabilities of the target device will help drive adoption. However, in the end, service differentiation and generating suitable return on investment from the app store business could be challenging.  more

Free Facebook for Vodafone UK Customers

Vodafone UK says that it is to make mobile internet access to the Facebook website free of charge from the end of this week for a single week. Giving customers free access to Facebook is part of Vodafone UK's Free Friday series, which launched with Free Mobile Internet in May to mark the start of a flat daily rate of just 50p to browse the mobile internet, and continued with Free Music Friday in June when Vodafone became the first mobile operator in the UK to launch DRM free music.  more

GetJar to Power Virgin Mobile's French App Store

Independent app store, GetJar says that it has been chosen by the MVNO, Virgin Mobile France to provide its entire catalogue of free mobile applications for its mobile app store to be launched later this week. The launch of Virgin's app store coincides with the release of Virgin's new unlimited voice, SMS and data plans. Consumers in France will be offered access to over 45,000 free apps via the Virgin Mobile portal, alongside other key content such as ringtones and premium games.  more

SingTel Launches Unlimited Mobile Music Service

Singapore based mobile network operator, SingTel has alunched a free mobile music download service for its contract customers. The service, branded SingTel AMPed, has been developed in partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG) and offers music videos and pre-release albums in addition to conventional music downloads.  more

China Telecom Offers Free Mobile Internet Access as Prepares for 3G Launch

China Telecom, which recently took over the CDMA network formerly owned by China Unicom has started offering free mobile internet access as it prepares to roll out its 3G network upgrade in the capital city. The South China Morning Post reported that new subscribers will get between 20 and 50 megabytes of free internet usage per month, depending on their tariff.  more

Phones Donated to Tanzanian Albino Community

Police in Tanzania have handed out 350 free mobile phones to the albino population - to help them call for help if attacked. There has been a spate of killings of albinos over the past year following a fashion for using the body-parts in local witchcraft. There has also been long running discrimination as some people consider albinos to be cursed.  more
