France Telecom Reported to be Seeking Indian Investment
France Telecom is reported to be in talks to take a stake in India's Aircel for between US$1.4-$2 billion. The French company is said to be in talks with Malaysia's Maxis, which owns 74% of the company to take the stake. In the meantime, Maxis shareholder, Saudi Telecom is looking to increase its holding in the firm from 25% to 35%. more

Orange Tried to Buy T-Mobile UK
France Telecom is reported to have made an offer to buy T-Mobile UK, but was rebuffed by T-Mobile's German parent company, Deutsche Telekom. The UK's Guardian newspaper also noted that Vodafone was rumoured to have offered to do a swap for its Turkish subsidiary, although the deal was denied by Vodafone. more

France Telecom has reported a 4.4% drop in first-quarter profits due to costs incurred by its French television services. EBITDA was down 4.4% on a comparable basis, at EUR 4.3 billion. The EBITDA margin dropped 1.7 points from the first quarter of 2008. more

France Telecom has taken control of Senegal based Sonatel after it brought 9.87% of the company from the Senegalese government, taking its ownership to 52.2%. Once the transaction has been completed, the Senegalese government will remain Sonatel's second biggest shareholder with 17.28% of the operator's capital. more

Bouygues Telecom Loses 3G License Appeal
The European Court of Justice has ruled that the French government was correct in retrospectively lowering the 3G license fees it charged to France Telecom and Vivendi's SFR. In 2000, the French government sold two 3G licenses to France Telecom and SFR for EUR4.95 billion each. A later attempt in 2002 to sell the remaining two licenses raised just EUR619 million from Bouygues Telecom. The fourth license remains unsold to this day. more

Orange Launches a GSM Network in Uganda
